.application tiled April t, 1914:. Serial No. @$9,463.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that ll, JOHN M. HOTHERSALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the c ounty of Kings and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Cover-Seals, of which the following is a specication.
'.lhis invention relates to improvements in cover seals and more particularly to cover seals for small boxes such as are adapted to contain pills and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a seal so arranged that it will securely hold the cover of lthe can or box in place during shipment and prevent tampering with the contents of the box before reaching the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a seal such as above outlined which may be easily broken by the user.
rllhe invention furthermore consists in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and .devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box and seal showing one embodiment of my improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View upon an enlarged scale showing more particularly the form of the sealn ing strip.
lin said drawing, the type of box shown is that of one having a body member '10 and a sliding cover 11, the cover having depending sides 12 which slide over the sides of the body of the box, said sides 12 each having an inturned flange 13 which extends under the bottom of the body 10. To hold the cover in place and to prevent tampering with the contents of the box until the same reaches the consumer, l provide a sealing strip 14 which may be made of sheet metal substantially channel shape in cross-section as shown in Fig. 3 so that the upper Bange 15 extends over the top of the box and the lower ange 1G extends under the box. This strip is made continuous by having the ends lapped and soldered as at 17. To facilitate removal of the sealing strip, aV tearing tongue 18 is provided which is formed integral with said strip and is preferably located at one corner of the box and extended over the top thereof as shown at Fig., 1. The strip is scored as indicated at 19 so that when the user pulls the tongue i8 the strip will be torn at the corner and the stripthen removed from the box. To facilitate the user obtaining a flrmgrip on y the tongue 18, the latter may be provided yembodiment of my improvements, yet it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and all l such changes and modifications are contemplated as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
ll claim:
' 1. An article of manufacture comprising, in combination: a body member; a cover slidably united to the body member; a continuous sheet metal sealing lstrip of substantially channel shape in cross-section entirely encircling the cover and the under side of the edge of the body member and passing across the end edges of the slidable coverl danges and across the ends of the body; and a tearing tongue formed integral with the strip, the strip being scored adjacent the tongue to facilitate the tearing.
2. An article of manufacture. of the character described comprising,.in combination: a box body provided with two longitudinal recesses along the side edges of the bottom thereof; a sliding cover provided with vertical side danges adapted to t over the sides `of said box body, said side' flanges terminating in horizontal inwardly extending bottom flanges adapted to fit within the said longitudinal recesses in the bottom of said box body; and a continuous sheet metal sealing strip separate from said body and cover and of substantially channel shape in crosssection having a vertical flange terminating` in an upper inwardly extending horizontal angev ittlng over the top of said box body and cover, and a lower inwardly extending Signed this 28th day of March, 1914, in
horizontal ange fitting beneath the bottom the presence of two witnesses.
of said box body and cover, said continuous JOHN M HOTHERSALL sealing 1 strip. having a tearing tongue by 5 which said seal may be broken to permit the Witnesses:
cover to be removed; substantially as speci- C. W. GRAHAM,
