UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MINARD A. POSSONS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STOVE COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
METALLIC STRENGTHENING- AND FINISHING BINDING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed January 27, 1912. Serial No. 673,882.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MINARD A. PossoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Strengthening and Finishing Bindings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in a metallic strengthening and finishing binding, the object of which is to provide a metallic strengthening and finishing binding attachable to the exposed edges of sheet metal.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sheet metal stove hood with my improved finishing and strengthening binding applied to the exposed edges thereof. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view showing the parts of Fig. 2 in separated relation. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view showing the parts of Fig. 4 in separated relation.
My improved finishing and strengthening metal binding is composed of a strip of metal having the angularly arranged portions 1 and 2, which are here shown at a right angle. The portion 1 has an inwardly double U-shaped end 3, which is shorter than the part 1 to form a slot or space 4: between the end of the part 3 and the part 2. Preferably, the opening or space 5, between the part 3 and the part 1, is narrower at the end of the part 3 than it is at the doubled portion or outer end thereof.
The metal sheet 6, to which the binding is applied, has its edge 7 bent laterally and enters into the space 5 between the part 3 and part 1 of the binding. This metal binding is preferably of heavier material than the sheet 6, which it binds, as here shown. By reference to Figs. 2 and 4, it will be observed that the space 5 is wider than the thickness of the sheet 6, whereby the binding is attachable, and in the construction of these parts the metal binding is shaped up independent of the sheet 6, and the lateral bent end 7 of the sheet is formed independently of the binding. The binding is also detachable from the edge of the sheet, if desired for any purpose. Also by reference to Figs. 2 and 4, it will be observed that the angles of the laterally bent portion 7 and the walls of the space 5 are different, whereby there is a friction contact between the binding and the sheet 6, and whereby the long part 2 of the binding and the body i the end plate 10 is formed on a curved line,
as there shown and as shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a sheet of metal having a bent edge arranged at an obtuse angle thereto, of a binding having a body portion engaging the face of the sheet and having an overlapping doubled portion at right angles to the body portion, and the space between the overlapping portion being considerably greater than the thickness of the bent edge of the binding, whereby the bent edge of the sheet frictionally engages the inner faces of the doubled portion of the binding and frictionally holds the binding to the sheet.
2. The combination with a sheet of metal having a margin arranged at an angle thereto, of a binding having a body portion engaging the face of said sheet and having a doubled portion overlapping said margin, said doubled portion arranged at an angle to the body portion less than the angle between the said sheet, and said margin, whereby the margin of the sheet frictionally engages the inner face of the doubled portion of the binding, and frictionally holds the binding to the sheet.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
