To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. VVoo'rTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Handle-Clamp, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of novel means for clamping a handle to a metal can, bucket, pail or other receptacle, whereby the handle is connected in position in a firm reliable, simple, and inexpensive manner as will be hereinafter set forth.

For the purpose of explaining my invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organiza tion shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the exterior of a handle clamp embodying my invention, the same being in position on a can, etc. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the interior thereof, the same being in position on a can, etc. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the clamp detached. Fig. 1 represents a vertical sect-ion on line zvw Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a view of the interior of a piece of a can, etc, showing the construction thereof prior to the appli cation of the clamp.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings :A designates a piece of the body of a-sheet metal can, or other receptacle, the same having thereon the pairs of horizontally-extending lips B, and the slots C intermediate of the members of each pair of lips, said lips being formed by cutting the metal of the body into the form of such lips and turning or bending the same inwardly into horizontal direction, whereby they are separated and provide the slots C between them, the lips thus being integral with the piece A.

D designates a trough or U-shaped ear, and E designates pairs of tongues which extend from the side terminals of said ear, the pairs being separated leaving between them the channel F.

G designates a handle of loop or ring shape formed preferably of sufficiently heavy wire,

one side of the same being inserted within and hung on the ear D, the latter occupying the exterior of the body of the receptacle, it being noticed that the tongues E pass through the slots G into the interior of the body of the receptacle, and are curled or bent over as at H on the lips B, and so interlocked therewith, the curls or bends H of said tongues forming shoulders which abut against the inner wall of the piece A, and are of greater thickness than the width of the slots C in vertical direction.

The portion J of the edges of the ear between the tongues E abuts against the solid portion K of the piece A between the slots C, and so the ear is braced against said portion, and its ends are prevented from being wrenched from the body by any leverage or draft on the ends of the ear when the handle is in use, the hold of the ear on the body of the receptacle being increased by the shoulders formed by the curls or bends H which also prevent the tongues from being drawn outwardly through the slots C and disconnection of the ear, it being noticed that the inner terminals of the body of the ear I) are also inturned toward each other forming shoulders L which abut against the piece A and serve to strengthen said edges and provide wide surfaces for their contact with said piece and that by the construction presented the handle is firmly attached to the receptacle, the means employed being simple, inexpensive and practical, and soldering or such for connection of the ear with the receptacle is dispensed with, the handle being adapted to be raised to operative position and afterward lowered or folded against the piece A, as usual in such cases, it being noticed also that the slots G are closed on the exterior of the body by shoulders L, and by the curls or bends H of the tongues E on the interior thereof whereby leakage of the contents of the body through said slots is prevented it being noticed further that said slots 0 are of less width than said shoulders and curls, hence the tongues E cannot be withdrawn through the same, and the ear D is firmly controlled in the slots by the abutment of said shoulders and curls against opposite sides of the piece A, and the interlocking of said curls with the lips B.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a handle clamp of the character stated, a receptacle having on the body thereof inturned lips with a slot between the same, combined with a trough-shaped ear having shoulders abutting the outer face of the said body, and tongues extending from said shoulders, said tongues passing through said slots and interlocked with said lips and having shoulders abutting against the inner wall of said body. a

In a handle clamp of the character stated, a receptacle having on the body thereof inturned lips with a slot between the same, combined with atrough-shaped ear having shoulders abutting the outer face of said body and tongues extending from said shoulders, said tongues passing through said'slot and substantially in contact with each other where passing through the slot, the terminals of said tongues being disposed in opposite-directions on said lips and in the direction of the latter.

In a handle clamp of the character stated a receptacle having a slot in the body thereof a trough-shaped ear having shoulders on the face of the trough-shaped portion thereof adjacent said body to engage the outer wall of said receptacle, tongues extending from said shoulders substantially in contact with each other, said receptacle having portions upon the interior adjacent the slot and means on the terminals of said tongues adapted to interlock with said portions of the receptacle adjacent the slot through which said tongues are passed and having shoulders to abut the inner face of the wall of such receptacle.

4. In a handle clamp of the character stated, a receptacle having in its side a slot and lips integral with said side inturned at said slot, combined with a trough-shaped ear having shoulders abuttting the outer face of said body and tongues extending substantially in contact with each other from said shoulders through said slot, said tongues being bent in opposite directions outwardly with their terminals in frictional engagement with and interlocking with said lips.

5. In a handle clamp, a receptacle having a slot in the body thereof, an ear adapted to have a handle mounted thereon, tongues extending inwardly on said ear, shoulders on the inner terminals of said ear, lips on the inner walls of said slot, and deflections on the inner ends of said tongues, the same being adapted to engage with said lips, said shoulders abutting against the interior of said body.
