A TTOR/VE Y 8 an s'rn'rss PATENT ora ion THOMAS W. CLEMMENTS, OF FREDONIA, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO HAYSLER MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF FREDONIA, KANSAS.
WASHBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed May 15, 1915. Serial No. 28,349.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, THOMAS W. CLEM- Mnx'rs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of F redonia, in the county of Wilson and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVashboards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wash boards, and more particularly to certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
One of the objects of the present invention is the provision of a wash board which is so constructed as to permit of any number being packed for shipment whereby the same will occupy a minimum amount of space.
Another object is to provide a novel form of shelf for holding a cake of soap thereon and at the same time permitting the complete drainage of water and suds therefrom.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the wash board constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. tis a similar section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective of one of the upper corners of the board showing the means for securing the knobs thereof in position.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, it will be seen that the wash board comprises a back plate generally indicated by the numeral 6 and having its lower portion 7 corrugated, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The back plate is bent rearwardly intermediate the top and bottom thereof, as indicated at 8, to form the upper portion 9 which is slightly inclined forwardly and which terminates at its upper end in an overhanging top plate 10 having at its outer edge a depending flange 11. The back plate 6 has secured to the lower portion 7 thereof, in any suitable manner, arubber 12 which is also corrugated in any preferred manner, said portion 7 and rubber 12 being curved transversely to provide a convex rubbing surface.
The side edges of the back plate 6 are bent to form tubular upright side posts 12 having wings 13 extending into said posts for a major portion of the lengths thereof. The legs 14: of the board are fitted into the bottom ends of said posts and are provided with longitudinally extending grooves adapted to receive the wings 13. The legs 14 may be further secured in position by means of suitable fastenings 15. The ends of the top plate 10 adjacent the posts 12 are reduced, as indicated at 16, and terminate in substantially V-shaped depending tongues 17 which project down into the top of the post 12 and are of suflicient resiliency to grip the sides of the knobs 18 whereby the same are securely held in engagement with said posts. If desirable, suitable fasteners may be driven through the openings 19 adjacent the top of the posts to engage said knobs to hold the same in position.
The upper portion 9 of the back plate 6 is provided on each side thereof with outstruck portions 20 which merge into the fiat surface of said portion adjacent the bottom thereof and contiguous to the upper edge of the rubber 12. Intermediate the points where said out'struck portions merge into the flat surface of the upper portion 9 there is provided an angular soap holding shelf 21 which has its upper surface 22 inclined downwardly and rearwardly, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, whereby a cake of soap may be successfully held in position on the shelf when the board is in use. The ends of the shelf 21 are beveled, as indicated at 23, so that an accumulation of water or suds thereon will be prevented and the same drained off between the ends of the shelf and the adj acent out-struck portions 20.
In packing for shipment, the boards are placed on top of each other so that one leg 14 of each superimposed board will engage under the flange 11 of the top plate 10 of the board below and the back plate 6 of the upper board will engage the rubber 12 of the lower board. Thus it will be seen that owing to the construction and arrangement of the parts, only a minimum amount of space will be required in packing the boards. 7
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the invention contemplates providing a wash board of simple construction, efficient, durable, and one which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
I claim 1. A wash board comprising a back plate bent intermediate its ends to form a substantially horizontal portion, a corrugated rubber secured to the lower portion of said back plate, and an angular shelf having one edge secured to said back plate at the top of said rubber and having a flat downwardly inclined top terminating at its inner edge contiguous to the inner edge of said horizontal portion, said back plate being provided with a struck-out portion on each side of said shelf and adapted to cooperate therewith to direct the drainage on to the rubber.
2. A wash board comprising a back plate bent intermediate its ends to form a sub stantially horizontal portion, a corrugated rubber secured to the lower portion of said back plate, and an angular shelf having one edge secured to said back plate at the top of said rubber and having a fiat downwardly inclined top terminating at its inner edge contiguous to the inner edge of said horizontal portion, said back plate being provided with a struck out portion on each side of said shelf and adapted to cooperate therewith to direct the drainage on to the rubber, and a top plate overhanging the said shelf and struck out portion.
