UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIo DANIEL r. MAHON, or QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'Feb. 27,1917.
- Application filed November 14;, 1915. Serial No. 131,229.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL P. MAHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyhole Attachments for Locks; and I do hereby declare .the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same.
.This invention relates to a key-hole attachment for locks and has for its primary object the provision of means for guiding a key into the key-hole of a lock, thus -obviating the annoyance of feeling for a keyhole in the dark or like time.
Another object of ,this invention is'to provide a frustro-oonical shaped plate positioned over the key-hole of a lock and having a central key-hole slot therein, whereby upon inserting the key into the frustro-conical shaped plate, the key will be guided into the key-hole of the lock.
' A further object of this invention'js to provide a tongue formed on the lower wall of the key-hole slot of the plate and extending into an engagement with the lower wall of the keyhole of a lock to guide the key therein without the key engaging or catching upon the lower wall thereof.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a key-hole attachment for looks of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and Sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference will be had to the following descriptionan'd accompanying drawings, in which hole attachment for looks constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse Sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a front plate of a door lock which is secured to a door- 2, by means of screws or other like fasteners 3 and which plate is provided with a key-holeslot 4, for
allowing a key to beinserted within the lock of the door and over which my invention is applied.
frusto-conical shaped guide plate 5 is provided with a central key-hole slot 6, which is placed in alinement with the keyhole slot- 4 of the plate 1. The guide plate 5 has oppositely disposed and downwardly depending legs 6 formed thereon which have their lower ends bent at right angles to form attaching feet 7 that are riveted or other-- wise Secured to the plate 1. A tongue 8 is formed upon the lower wall of the key-hole slot 6 of the guide plate 5 and engages the lower wall of the key-hole slot 4 of the plate 1, so that upon an insertion of a key into theconical shaped guide plate 5, it will be guided through thekey-hole slot 6 and into the key-hole slot 4 of the plate 1 without engaging the lower wall of the key-hole slot 4 of the plate 1, as the tongue 8 guides the key over the lower wall thereof and prevents the key from engaging or catching the lower'wall, thus establishingan efficient. and cornpleted guide for a key into the lock of a oor.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that uponshoving or pushing a key against the wall of the guide plate, it will be ided throughthe key-hole slot 6 therein, into the lock of the door by way of the key-hole slot 4 in the plate and also will be prevented from catching or engaging the bottom wall of the Slot 4 by the tongue 8.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. V v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In combination with a lock including a key-hole slot, of a frusto-conical shaped guide plate secured to the lock and having a central key-hole slot in registration With the key-hole slot of the lock. and a tongue
