MUSIC-HOLDER.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, CARL Cr. Moulins, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city oi Chicago, county of Cook, and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Music-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to music holders and has tor its object the production ot a device designed for use in connection with a piano or like instrument for holding the music sheets in position upon the music rest of the instrument in such a manner as to not interfere with or obstruct the reading of the music.

A :further object is the production of a holder as mentioned which may be readily and easily adjusted so as to adapt the same for use upon instruments of various sizes and forms, and which, when not in use, may be entirely removed from the instrument.

ri. further object is the production of a holder which will be of simple and economical construction and eicient in use.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

rThe preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a circular metallic base l adapted, when the device is in use to be placed upon the top of the instrument as clearly shown in Fig. l, the under side of said base being preferably provided with a covering of felt or other suitable material to prevent marring of the surface upon which the same is arranged.

Formed centrally upon the upper side oit' the base l are two upwardly extending spaced resilient ears 2. Cooperating with the base l is an arm 3, one end of which is positioned between the ears 2 and pivotally connected therewith by means of a thumb screw Li.

Upon the outer end of the screw 4: is threaded a thumb nut 5, the arrangement being such that flexing of the ears 2 in order to clamp the arm 3 in its positions of pivotal adjustment, or to release said arm being eiiected by engagement and rotation of said screw and nut as will be readily understood.

The arm 3 is ot curved formation so as to adapt the 'free end thereof to overhang the front edge ot the piano top as clearly shown in Fig. l. Coperating with the front end of the arm 3 is a second arm 6 pivotally connected with the biturcated end oi' said arm by means of a screw 7 and nut 8, the arrangement being such that said arm may be locked in positions of pivotal adjustment relative to the arm 3 by manipulation of said screw 7 and nut 8. The arm 6 at its upper end curves rearwardly from the point of pivotal connection with said arm 3 in or der to adapt the arm 6 to be positioned in close proximity with the music rest of the instrument upon which the same is arranged extending parallel therewith. The lower end of the arm 6 is straight and is adapted, when the device is in use, to rest against the music sheets in order to prevent the same being accidentally displaced from the music rest. Said arm is very slender, as shown, so that when in use, if the same is arranged centrally of the music sheets, that is at the hinge thereof, the sheets may be turned with practically no interference on the part of said arm.

Cooperating with the arm 6 is a cross bar 9 provided at its rearward side with a strap 10 which loosely embraces the arm 6 permitting oi' free sliding adjust-ment of said bar upon said arm. A set screw 11 threaded in the bar 9 is adapted to engage with the arm 6 in order to releasably lock said bar in positions of sliding adjustment. The bar 9 is designed for use particularly in connection with music books in order to hold the latter' in open position, considerable diiliculty and annoyance being. as is known, experienced by players in holding music books open at the place desired. rlhrough the employment of the bar 9, the respective ends of the latter will engage against the opposite sides of the book and thus serve to securely hold the same in open position. When the holder is used in connection with sheet music, the bar 9 may be dispensed with.

A holder of the construction set forth is simple and economical in construction, by reason of the pivotal connection .betweenthe arm 3 and the base 1 and the arm 6 and the free end of arm 3, vertical adjustment of said arm 6 is rendered readily possible in order to adapt the device for use upon instruments of various sizes. Moreover, the device is of neat and finished design and will therefore add to the appearance of any instrument upon which the same is used.

. While I have illustrated and described the preferred formy of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing fromthe spiritV of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise detailsv of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself o f such variations and modifications as come within they scopev of the appended claims.

Having' described my invention vwhat I claim as' newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y

1. A device of the class described comprising a base adapted for arrangement upon thetop of a pianol or like instrument; an arm pivotally connected at one end with said base at substantially the center thereof; means for releasablyclamping said arm in positions of pivotal adjustment relative to said base, said arm being curved so as to permit of the free end thereof projecting below said base and overhanging the front edge of the piano top; an arm having one end pivotally connected with Vthe free end of said first mentioned arm, said second-mentioned arm being adapted to assume a posaid base; means for releasably clamping said armv in positions of pivotal adjustment relative to said base, said arm being curved so as to permit of the free-end thereof passing around the front edge ofthe piano top.; an arm having one end pivotally connected with the free end of said first mentioned arm, Vthe free end of said second mentioned arm being straight and adapted to assumey a position parallel with the music rest of the instrument; means for vreleasably V clamping said second mentioned armkin positions of pivotal adjustment relative to said first mentioned arm; and a cross bar carried by said second mentioned arm, substantially as described.
