W. 0. TRAHER. BOOK HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 19. 1909.
PatentedMay 24, 1910.
WITNESSES R mg: {M
Ame/vars WWs WILFRED CHARLES TRAI-IER, OF LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24., 1910.
Application filed August 19, 1909. Serial No. 513,559.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, WILFRED C. TRAHER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of London, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Book-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to book-holders, and particularly to book-holders for stenographic and other note books, a plate being provided which is pivoted to a cover of a note book, a bent wire with fingers being pivoted to the plate, and the fingers being adapted to engage and hold the covers of the book relatively to each other.
In this specification I will describe the referred form of my invention, it being unerstood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the vlews.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a note book held in position by my holder; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the holder; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a cover of a book to which my holder is secured and Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view showing the means of securing the wire member in the elongated bearing or sleeve.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a plate 1 is provided, which has an orifice 2 therein, the plate 1 being thus adapted to be pivoted to the cover 3 of a book by means of a McGrill or other fastener t, which is pushed through an opening in the said cover and through the orifice 2 in the plate 1, the terminals of the fastener being turned over so that the plate will be pivoted to the cover. The plate 1 has an elongated bearing 5 in which is journaled a terminal 6 of the wire member 7, the wire member 7 being adapted to rotate relatively to the plate 1 so that it may be disposed substantially in alinement with the plate 1 or at right angles thereto, the plate 1 being adapted to rotate relatively to the cover 3 of the book so that the plate 1 and the wire member 7 may be disposed substantially in alinement with each other well within the borders of the cover so that they will not protrude beyond the edge of the book.
In the wire member 7 are formed two loops 8 and 9, which serve as fingers the loop 8 being disposed near the terminal 6 of the wire member so that the cover 3 may be clam ed between the loop 8 and the elongate bearing 5, the other terminal 10 of the wire member 7 being bent substantially parallel with the loop 9 to serve as an additional finger so that the other cover 11 of the book may be clamped between the loop 9 and the terminal 10 of the wire member 7.
When the holder is not in use, the loops of the. wire member 7 are freed from the covers 3 and 11, the wire member 7 is turned on its pivotso that it is disposed substantially in alinement with the plate 1, the plate 1 being turned on its pivot so that the plate and the wire member are disposed within the borders of the cover. When it is desired to use the holder, the plate 1 is turned on its pivot so that the outer terminal of the elongated bearing is disposed far enough beyond the edge of the cover 3 to permit the wire member 7 to turn in the said bearing without the loop 8 contacting with the edge of the cover 3. When the wire member 7 is turned with its loops 8 and 9 substantially at right angles to the plate 1, the plate 1 is moved inwardly and the cover 3 is thereby clamped between the elongated bearing 5 and the loop 8; the other cover 11 of the book is then inserted between the loop 9 and the terminal 10 of the wire member 7 when it will be found that the covers 3 and 11 of the book are held relatively to each other so that the book will stand upright and the pages will be exhibited. There is a recess 12 around the terminal 6 of the wire member 7, the elongated bearing or sleeve 5 being indented at 13 to engage the said recess 12, by which means the terminal 6 is prevented from slipping from the elongated bearing or sleeve 5.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a book-holder, a plate adapted to be pivoted to a book, and a wire member pivoted to the plate, the wire member having fingers adapted for engaging the covers of a book to hold them relatively to each other.
2. In a book-holder, a plate adapted to be attached to the book, and a wire member pivoted to the plate on an axis at an angle.
to the middle portion of the wire member,
the Wire member having fingers adapted for engaging the covers of a book to hold them relatively to each other.
3. In a book-holder, a plate adapted to be attached to a book, the plate having an elongated bearing, and a wire member j ournaled in the bearing, the body of the wire member being disposed substantially at right angles to the bearing and having fingers which are adapted for engaging the covers of a book to hold them relatively to each other.
4. In a book-holder, a plate adapted to be attached to a book, and a Wire member pivoted to the plate, the Wire member having looped portions for engaging portions of the book to hold them relatively to each other.
5. A book, a wire member, and means by which the wire member is pivoted to the book, the wire member having looped portions forming fingers which are adapted for engaging portions of the book to hold them relatively to each other.
6. A book, a plate pivoted to the book, and a Wire member having looped portions forming fingers, which are adapted for engaging portions of the book to hold them relatively to each other.
7. A book, a wire member, and means by which the Wire member is pivoted to the book, the Wire member having fingers adapted for engaging portions of the book to hold them relatively to each other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILFRED CHARLES TRAHER.
