M. VERNON.
PAPER HOLDER.
(No Model.)
No. 366,902. Patented July 19, 1887.
l/Vl/EIVTOH Miles Vern o L- WITNESSES:
By MM Ai/A TTOB/VEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILES VERNON, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK.
PAPER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,902, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed April 10, 1857. Serial No. 235,379. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MILEs VERNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a holder for papers, bills, letters, and other objects, as set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section, of a holder. Fig. 2 is a plan View of a holder, part being broken away. Fig. 3 is a section in the plane a" :r, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a holder.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a base orsupport of wood or othersuitable material. On the base can be placed an object, G, such as a sheet of music, a manuscript, or other article. The support A has a ledge, B. An inclined pivot, O, is mounted in the ledge B.
A clamp, D, swings about said pivot. The clamp D is made in the shape of an arm. A
head, E, on the arm or clamp D, enables the clamp to be readily swung back and forth. As the free end of the clamp D is swung to ward the ledge B, said free end will approach the support A, and will clamp the object G against such support. The clamping position of the clamp D is indicated in Fig. 2 by full lines. when swung away from the ledge B to the position indicated in Fig. 2 by broken lines, the free end of the clamp D will rest at some distance from the support A, as seen in Fig. 3, so that the object G can be readily removed from the support A.
The ledge B is provided with a wedgeshaped recess or opening, F, into which enters part of the clamp D. When the clamp is moved to its clamping position, part of the clamp D is moved against an edge of the recess F, as also into the narrow part of the opening or recess F. The clamp D will thereby be held firmly in its clamping position.
The inclined position of the pivot will cause the free end of the clamp D to move toward the base A when the clamp D is swung from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and by having the clamp partly enter the wedge shaped recess F, as seen in Fig. 2, said free end of the clamp will be pressed against the base A. An 0bjeet--such as a sheet of paper-can thus be clamped between the base A and the clamp D.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a base, A, and ledge B, of an inclined pivot secured to said ledge, and a clamp, D, made to swing on said inclined pivot, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a base, A, and ledge B, of an inclined pivot secured to said ledge, and a clamp, D, provided with ahead, E, and made to swing on said inclined pivot, substant-iall y as set forth.
3. The combination, with a base, A, and ledge B, having a wedgeshaped recess, of an inclined pivot secured to said ledge, and a clamp, D, made to swing on said inclined pivot and adapted to partly enter said wedge-shaped recess, substantially as set forth. V
4. The combination, with a base, A, and ledge B, having a wedge-shaped recess, of a swinging clamp, D, adapted to swing against an edge of said recess, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihavehereunto set my hand and seal in the presence oftwosubserib-. ing witnesses.
MILES VERNON.
