To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonon WV. NEWTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at I Farrell, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Band-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a band cutter adapted to be applied to the feed table of a threshing machine, the main end. in view being to provide a device of this type which may be controlled readily by the person who is feeding the grain into the threshing machine, it being unnecessary to employ one person to feed the grain and to employ another person to cut the bands.
Specifically, the invention aims to provide novel means for mounting the knife and to provide novel means for actuating the knife, novel means being provided for preventing the actuating means from coming into direct contact with the knife as the latter is oscillated.
lVith the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing:-Figure 1 shows the invention in perspective; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 5 is a cross section.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the feeding table of a threshing machine, the same being provided with a slot 2, one end of which is inclined as indicated at 3. Secured to the lower face of the table 1 is a knife support in the form of a lug 4.
A knife 5 lies in the slot 2 and comprises a blade 6 and shank 7, the shank 7 being connected to the lug 4 by means of a pivot element 8. One edge 9 of the blade 6 of the knife 5 is inclined to cooperate with the inclined end wall 3 of the slot 2 and thus prevent the knife from swinging downwardly beyond a predetermined point. WVhen the knife is elevated by a means to be described hereinafter, the opposite end edge 9 of the blade 6 cooperates with one end of the slot 2 to limit the lifting movement of the blade.
Secured to the under face of the table 1 are guides 10 which serves to support a re ciprocating slide, the slide includinga shank 11. having a handle 12, and a cross head 14: secured to the shank 11, the cross head 14 being mounted to reciprocate within the guides 10. Secured to the cross head 14 is a lifter 15, beveled as indicated at 16 to cooperate with the inclined edge 9 of the knife 5.
In order to raise the knife 5, the slide is retracted by means of the handle 12, the lifter 15 engaging the edge 9 of the knife and elevating the same so that the same will cut the bands, as the sheaves of grain are advanced over the feeding table 1. When the slide is advanced so that the lifter 15 is no longer in engagement with the knife 5, the knife 5 will drop under its own weight, the inclined edge 9 of the knife cooperating with the inclined edge 3 of the slot 2 in the table 1 to limit the downward movement of the blade.
It is to be observed that the element 15 exercises two functions. First, as hereinbefore stated, it constitutes the means whereby the knife 5 is lifted. Secondly,being interposed between the shank 11 of the slide and one of the guides 10, it serves to space the shank of the slide apart from the knife 5. It is to be observed that one end of the shank 7 is mounted to slide upon the end of the pivot element 8 and thus the pivot element serves as a means for spacing the slide apart fromthe knife 5.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a band cutter, a table; a pivotally supported knife cooperating with the table; and a slide supported for right line movement and engaging the knife to lift the same.
2. In a band cutter, a table; a knife support; a knife cooperating with the table; a pivot element connecting the knife with the support; and a slide cotiperating with the knife to lift the knife, the knife being located between the support and the slide and the pivot element engaging the slide to space the slide apart from the knife.
3. In a band cutter, a table; a pivoted knife cooperating with the table; guides supported in juxtaposed relation to the table 1a slide including r a shank -;,a-nd a cross head, the cross head being H},1Il ,tfil t 0 slide in the guidesnnd includingmeansfor engaging the lower edge of the'knife to raise the knife.
