.of. Illinois, lmveinvented certain new ahdZ Improvements in Feed-Tables for? Printing-Presses, t which'thefollowing is- The invention has proi'ement illthe feeding mechanisn of. printing press s .whereby to obtain uniformity; :of action underchanging conditions Ordinarily thefeed table is, of wood 'eqnippedr wlt-h a metal terminallip which extends tangentially into close-relation to thefcylinder .onto which the sheet isgdeliv-r owed; As, however, the wood. is subject to swelling, warping and contracting under varying atmospheric conditions and the lip is supported. directly thereon) the relation.
and the uniformity ofthe feeding-action 1s afi'ected detrimentally.
By the present invention I employ preferably as a part ofthe feed table a metallic supporting *frame by which the wooden metallicterminal lip whichwforms in e ect a continuation of the board andextendsto a position closely adjacent and substantially ried bIy thefiframe and isii dependent of the board it is not afiected b warping or swelling of the latter and! maintains at all table and cylinder whatever the atmospheric The side gages are also usually carried by the board and are thus atfected by any changes in the lattersueh as those referred to, By xnounting these gages independent ofi; the board onthe frame or lip uniformity in the positioning A further feature of the invention is the provision of improved registering means whereby to secure an accurate positionin I of the lip relative to the cylinder as the feed table swings from an elevated inoperative position to an operative position. To this end I employ a coacting stud or socket proextentv to which the former may enter the In the accompanying drawings and in the description based thereon is set forth a prefbiiit'sobject an im ferred embodiment of the invention.- As, 3 however, the same is susceptible oi embodiiment in other and varied constructional orrns. and modifications the drawing and scrlptioniare to be taken in an illustrative an 7 not in an unnecessarily limiting sense he rawi g E gvxevl'isiaw plan view of the feed board and-ad'iwontjparts with certain portions broken away;Eig. 2 is as de elevation of l; and Fig. 3 is a fr g nt y iew: on a nlarge scale Z i the forwardportio liof the ieedzboard shown%. registering dev *thedraw ngsthe; printing cylinder is represented at IL with the front gages; 12 supported thereabove upon the rock shaft13.
The feed table gtiltabl mounted on; the shaft l suitably carried, ytheflfighme work 15 and compr ses, a metallic framelti counterweighted at: llandghavinga terminal lip 18 suitably thereto at 1 9. A further element-ofjtlre-feed tableis the feed board 20 carried by the frame 16 and having its upper faee-inthesame plane as the metallic hp 18 which latter forms in eiiect an independenticontinuationof the board. Adjustably -mounted-uponthe terminal lip 18 by meansofijthe .screw 21 is a side gage 22 by whichthe sheets are laterally positioned to entef uponthe cylinder. Mountedupon the lower side of-the lip 18 and, projecting forwardlythereof is shown a thinfmetallic apron 23, which, under some circumstances, may'be dispensed with," the apron forming in effect the ti ofthe .lip 18. -F or proper y registering the feed table in its operative position a device is provided which consists of a nonoircular stud 24 which may be oval or polygonal in crosssection, this studbeing carried by a bracket 25 .fixed to the frame 16 and consequently moving, with the feed table. Cooperating with the stud 9A and formed within an integral portion- 26 'of the cylinder frarneie a socket corresponding in cross sectional-..-shape and size to the 'stud and adaptedl to snugly receive the latter so ,that thei'studentering thesocketwillaccurately position the feed table laterally and longitudinally; Threaded within the member 26 adj acent the socket isaset screw 27fhaving a shoulder 28 which underlies the socket and is adapted to be engaged by the lower end of the stud whereby the extent to which the stud may enter the socket is accurately controlled by the and that any changes in the latter dueto atmospheric or other conditions have no effect whatever upon the relation of the feed table as a whole to .the cylinder, or to the adjustment of the side gages; also that the proper registering of the feed tableinits' operative position v is effected between cotiperative parts carried respectively by the metallic frame of'the feed table and of the cylinder so that such registering is secured and maintained independent of anyvariations in the feed'board.
I 'claimz- 1. In a printing press, the combination with a c linder,- of a hinged metal frame, and a eed board carried thereb such frame having a metal terminal lip or min an independent continuation of the boar substantially as described 2. In a printing press, the combination with a-cylinder, of a hinged metal frame, and a feed board carried thereby, such frame having a metal terminal'lip formin an independent continuationof 'the boar and gages carried by the frame and independent of the board, substantially as described.
