Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed iay' 12.1913. Serial No. 768.25%
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, zen of the United States, and a resident of Lakewood, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful linprovement in Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and thc best mode in which l have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
ln comprehensive tiling systems, especially for filing Correspondence 'where the volume of correspondence is large, it is necessary for obvious reasons to carefully keep track of any correspondence taken out of the files. As ordinarilycarried out, a more or less elaborate charge system is employed for this purpose, the party, who desires to temporarily use any particular correspondence, having to Write out an order which is duly entered before the ile in question is turned over to him, and frequenti other records are kept.
rEhe object of the presentinvention is to' provide a simple and convenient; device whereby, not only may the charge be properly and automa ically entered, but an iudication left in the iile itself of the location of the papers temporarily Withdrawn, so that, should some one subsequently be look ing for said papers, he Will be at once advised as to their whereabouts.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related objects, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The anne. d drawing and the following description forth in detail certain mech.- anism emi?odyinsv the invention, such dis means onstituting however, but one of the various mechanical forms in 'which the principle oiI the invention may be used.
ln said anne ed drawingsrligure lis '.ioual vieiv of a guide. which forms l element of the present improved n. similar view of portion such guide showing a record slip designed be used in conjunction therewith; Fig.v 3 is an enlarged vieuT of such record slip by itself; and lli?. 4l is a transverse sectional 'vieiv of the slip in place on the guide, the plaine the section being indicated by the prin/s' is a The guide l, its from, is similar to those urrentlv used for i. ariou. systems JOHN C. HUB, a citi- ,record slip 4:, shown in Fig.
. back, the pari-y holding the of card indexing, being provided With a tab 2 extending above its upper edge a suitable distance and located at a point transversely of the card, such as may. be found most convenient in the particular installation. On such'tab is printed in large characters the notation Out, While below one portion of, and immediately adjacent to, the tab and the Word printed thereon, are provided holding means adapted to receive acard, or slip, and hold the saine with its upper edge alined with that of said tab. Where ,the guide, as is preferable, is made out of thin sheet metal, the aforesaid holding means are conveniently provided by simply stamping up and bending inwardly three tongues 3, as shown in Figs. l and Q, enough space being left between the tongues and the surface of the guide to permit of the introduction of the vSuch record slip 4L. may take on various forms, but in any event should include a space 5, so located as to aline with. 'the word lGut-7, when the slip is in place on the guide, such space being designed to receive the name of the ,tile Withdrawn. Below such space, another space 6 for the address may be pro vided, as Well as for various memoranda, and finally a space Z for either the number, or the name, of the party making the Withdrawal. l
In using the foregoing improved ling device, it is merely necessary for a party who desires to Withdraw a file, to enter the name,
retreated seat. i, tera@ or naine and address, of the correspondencev desired on a slip el, such as shown in Fig. 3, signing the slip in order that he may be properly charged. The filing clerk who receives the slip is enabled t-herehy'to identify at oocethe correspondence desired, and upon withdrawing the same substitutes in its place one of the guides l, such as shown in Fig. l, tirst introducing the signed slip l. -When in place, the latter, as shown in Fig. Q, clearly indicates, to any subsequent Searcher, what correspondence is Gut, at a glance. At the same time, by lifting the `guide or tilting it correspondence temporarily is disclosed. The convenience. and simplicity of the device when thus used are thought to be sui'iiciently obvions not to require detailed explanation. lt 'will be understood, of course, that when the correspondence is returned the guide is removed thc slip citlvr destroyed or filed for the purpose cfa permanent record.
- Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being ,made as regarde. the mechanism herein disclosed, pro` vided the means stated by any of the tollovving claims or the equivalent.- of such stated means be employed.
therefore particularly' point out andl distinctly claim as .my invention "Tlina device or" the character described, i-liecombination with a guide provided With a projecting tab and a holder adjacent thereto" 'oa slip adapted to be inserted in such holder.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a guide provided with 'afprojectin tab and a holder adjacent there- 'teysuch'ta bearing a notation; of a slip dptdfto be inserted in such holder and having a space' adapted to aline with the notation on such tab.
a' projecting tab and a holder located below one portion of such tab, such tab bearing the notation Out;'of a slip adapted to be inserted in such holder and having a space adapted to aline with, the notation on such tab.
4. In an index, van out-card adapted to be inserted into the index in place of withdrawn indexed matter, and a card adapted todisplay memoranda relative to such Withdrawn `matter and means -or removably holding said card on the out-card.
5. In an index, an out-card adapted to be inserted into the index in placev of Withdrawn indexed matter, and a card adapted to display memoranda relative to such Withdrawn matter; and a plurality of suitably disposed tongues mounted on said out-card and adapted to removably hold said card.
Signed by me, this 15 day of May, 1913. i'
ROBERT M. SEE, JN0. F. OBERLIN.
