PAMPHLET-FILE.

Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent N0. 45,570, dated December 27, 1864.

.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. the undersigned, RICH- ARD M. ABERCROMBIE, ofthe city of Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Method of Filing Phamphlets and Tracts, called Abercrombies Improved Pamphlet- File, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification.

A large number of pamphlets (perhaps the majority of those published) are too thin to have their titles printed or written on the back, and where large numbers of them have accumulated, as is the case in the large libraries ofthe world, great difficulty is experienced in filing them in such amanner as to have them convenient for reference; and the Object 0f this invention is to obviate this difficulty.

In the annexed drawings, Figurel shows my improved pamphlet-file as it would appear standing on the shelf of a library, the tile being open and the backs of the pamphlets within it exposed to view. It consists of a box ofthe proper size and shape to contain a number of the pamphlets which it is desired to iile. For the sake ot' uniformity in appearance it is made in the form of a bound book. The cover A, which is made in appearance like the back of a bound volume, is hinged on one side to the box or case, as shown in Fig 1, and may have a fastening or clasp on the opposite side to keep it closed, as it appears in Fig. 2. The pamphlets marked I, II, I1I, IIII, &c., are shown in their place in the ease or tile, Fig. l. A pamphlet, however thin, may be marked on its back in the manner just-described. Perfectly legible on the inside ofthe lid A, Fig. l, are corresponding marks preiixed to the titles of the pamphlets contained in the ease or file. On the outside of the lid or back be marked the contents of the file in gen'- eral, as shown in Fig. 2. VVh'en pamphlets are filed in the manner described, it is plain that any pamphlet in the collection may be found, taken out and read, and returned to its place without disturbing any other one in the collection, be the number ever so great. A case for the filing, marking. and indexing, of pamphlets and tracts, constructed. substantially in the manner described in the foregoing spcciiieation and the annexed drawings.
