HOOD AND NECK-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 7,1913.
Application filed January 30, 1912. Serial No. 674,249.
To aZZ whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. F IORI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hood and Neck-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptlon.
This invention relates to improvements in hoods and neck protectors, and has for an object the provision of improved means which may be utilized both as a hood and neck protector, or only as a neck protector.
A further object of the invention is to provide a neck protector or muffler designed to fit around the neck and to carry a hood which is adapted to be folded to a position in the neck protector when not in use.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, an encircling neckband is provided with depending front and chest protecting members. The neck portion is provided with means for clamping or securing together the ends thereof so that the device may be fastened properly around the neck. Connected with the neck portion of the device is a foldable hood which when desired may be unfolded over the head while the neck protector is surrounding the neck.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective viewshowing the head of a figure and an embodiment of the device applied; Fig. 2 is a side view of the device applied, the hood being shown unfolded; Fig. 3 is a sectional view through Fig. l, the device being shown applied; Fig. 4 is a front view of the device open with the hood unfolded; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4: except that the hood is shown folded.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a neckband structure having a pair of chest protecting members 2 and 8 connected therewith along its bottom edge and at the front portion thereof. The chest protecting members 2 and 3 are formed with straight edges 1 and 5 which mate or register when the securing studs 6 enter their retaining sockets 7 and the device assumes the position shown in Fig. 1.
Connected to the neck member 1 near the upper edge thereof is a hood 8. The bottom line 9 of the hood 8 extends for almost the full length of the neck so as to come well under the chin, as shown in Fig. 2, when the hood is expanded or unfolded and placed over the head. It will be evident that the hood 8 may be made of any size and substantially any shape for properly fitting over the head, and yet be capable of being folded as shown in Fig. 5. Preferably the hood 8 is folded on the lines 10, 11, 12, and 13, so as to occupy the space between the upper and lower edges of the bottom member. By this way of folding the hood the same is moved to a positoin out of the way, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5. It will also be noted from Figs. 1 and 3 that the hood 8 cannot be seen when properly folded and held in place by the retaining strip 14 which is preferably secured by stitches 15 to a point near the bottom edge of the neck member 1. The upper end of the strip 14 is provided preferably with a socket fitting over a suitable stud secured to the neck member 1, the stud and socket being of any usual or preferred structure.
A hood and neck protector formed according to the present invention is designed to negative the necessity of turning up the coat collar or overcoat collar in order to protect the neck and lower part of the head.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the character described, a neck encircling member, a pair of chest protectors connected with said neck encircling member and extending from the ends thereof at such an angle that when the ends of said neck encircling member are brought together the edges of said chest protectors will meet, means for holding the ends of said neck encircling member together, a folding hood secured to the inner side of the upper edge of said neck encircling member, said hood being adapted to be folded so as to extend when in a folded position from near the upper edge of said neck encircling member to near the lower edge thereof, and a retaining member for holding said hood in place while in a folded condition.
2. In a device of the character described, a muffler formed with a neck portion, a foldable hood connected to the neck portion and adapted to be folded over on to the neck portion and to extend substantially parallel with the neck portion, and an encircling In testimony whereof I have signed my binding strip connected at one end to the name to this specification in the presence 0i neck portion and removably secured at the tWo subscribing Witnesses.
