Description
N.PETERS, PKDTOnI-ITHDGRAFMER, WASHINGTON. D. C.,
tzuttd wm Letters Patent No. 10T,431, dated Sqxtembcr 13", 1870.
' IMPROVE!) 'WASHING-MACHINE;
The Schedule referred to in these `Letters Patent and making pari: of the same To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. WOOLSEY, of Bloomfield, in the county of Davis and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain n'ew and useful Improvements in lashing-liliachines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon Y forming a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washing-machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
. In order to enable others skilled in the' art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section,and
Figure 2 is an' end View of my machine.
The tub of my machine is constructed as follows:
A A represent the sides, of suitable size, in grooves, on which the end pieces B B are inserted.
Along the lower edges of the sides A A are other grooves, in which 4the metal bottom O is inserted, the ends of saidbottom being suitably secured in the lower edges of the end pieces B B, and the whole firmly fastened together by bolts D D.
At the ends of said bolts are long i'vashers, E' E', as shown in fig. 2, which prevent the sides from warpnig.
Under the bottom C is attached astore or furnace,
' E, by means of the metal strapG, for beating the water in the tub, and keeping it heat.
On one'side of the stove or furnace E is a recess, H, of suitable dimensions for the insertion of flatirons to be heated.
These irons are placcd with their bottoms against the side of the stove, and their handles -1 project, through slots in the cover I, to said recess, which cover is hinged-at its upper edge, as shown in thcdrawing.
at the necessary v'The tub AB 0, with the stove E, is supported by The body M of the drum is provided, or, rather, composed of external overlapped beveled slats, forming bucket-s to 'take the water up when the drum revolves., The slats of which the body M is composed run in one direction the entire'distance around ythe drum for one-halt' its length, while for the other halt' they run in the opposite direction, as shown in fig. 2;
`Inside of the drum thus'constructed are'ribs a a',
,running in an oblique direction, for the purpose ot throwing the water to the center. l
'.A portion of the drum L M is cutl olf, so as to form a door, which is hinged at one edge, and fastened by buttons, or other suitable devices, at the other edge.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj 1. The combination of the tub A B C with bolts D and washers E, and the drum L M with door and internal oblique ribs a a, all constructed to operate as set forth.
2,-The arrangement, under the inclined bottom of the washing-machine box A B G, of the furnace E, with strap G, recess H, and. slotted door I, all substantially as set forth. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 18th dayof February,
Y J. B. WOOLSEY. Witnesses:
S. H. GLENN, F. M. Futuros.
