Be itl known that l', Ilm Lotus Rnnvns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allerton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Fastening Devices, of which the 'following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hat fastening devices and it has tor an object to provide a Simple` effective and durable means for preventing a hat from being blown from the head of a wearer.

Another object is to provide a hat tastening device which will not catch the hair of the wearer.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a hat fastening so arranged that it can be swung up into the crown of a hat and retained there without interfering with the head of the wearer. And finally my obect is to provide a hat fastening which may be readily attached to and detached from the hat.

lVith these objects in view I have devised the hat fastening illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,

Referring to the drawings, l is a hat fastening device which consists of a very small gage wire, preferably of spring steel, arcuate m'shape, and having its ends 9. and 3 bent at right angles and sharpened to pin points 4 and 5. The central part of the wire is formed with a coil spring 6, the coils of which are widely separated as at 7, so that they do not Contact.. This arrangement ot the spring prevents any pinching, pulling or breaking of the hair.

In use the points of the ends of the device are pushed through the inner band 8 of the hat 9 alittle forward of the center and also through the hat straw so that the device will pivotally swing from the hat. `When the hat is put on the device tits snugly around the back ot the head and prevents the hat from blowing oil'. The spring permits the device to adjust itself to any sized head.

From the foregoing descri )tion taken in connection with the annexed drawings, it will be evident that. my hat fastening consists of a continuous piece ot' wire in bowed form, provided with an integral coiled spring substantially centrally positioned between its ends, the coils of said spring being separated to prevent the same catching in the hair, said ends being turned outward at an angle to the body of the wire. Said ends are adapted to penetrate the band of the hat by virtue of which the device can be pivotally connected with said hat band to permit it being swung down to engage back of the head when in operative relation or up into the haty when in inoperative relation. When said bowed device is in the hat or in inoperative relation it will be maintained in the hat by the resilient action of the wire upon the pivots. v

I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A hat fastening consisting of a continuous piece of wire in bowed form, provided with an integral coiled spring substantially centrally between the ends thereof, the coils of said spring being separated to prevent the same catching in the hair, said ends being turned outward at an angle to the body of the wire and constituting pivots and being adapted to penetrate the band of a hat, whereby said bowed wire can be swung down to engage back of the head or up into the hat, said bowed wire when in the hat being adapted by its resiliency to be held in said hat.
