Description

Nrrnn TATES Patented May 12, 1903.
ATENT. QFFICE.
CAST-OFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,073, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed April 1'7, 1 902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH F. BARTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cast-Offs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cast-offs; and it consists of certain features of construction possessing various advantages, such as requisite strength and durability and cheapness or simplicity of manufacture, as set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the cast-0E as applied to a suspender-strap. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the cast-ofi, and Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional View of the cast-off on the line Z'Z of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, a denotes the main or body por-' tion of the cast-0E, which is substantially V shape in contour; a, the shank portion, which terminates in the hook 0, The shank portion a is adapted to support the suspenderend 17. A spring or tongue a is adapted to prevent the buttonhole-tabs or flat wide portions 1) at each extremity of the end I) from running through the hook a and also to prevent the end I) from becoming detached from the seat or hook M. The suspenderend I) can thus be properly confined in the hook so as not to come loose while being worn nor to run or slip out of the hook at when the suspenders are loose or not worn, as when exhibited in a store. The spring a is formed from the body portion athat is to say, the central portion of the body a is cut out and then bent downwardly and its free end bent inwardly in a'curvilinearmannor, as at a toward the shank a. The free end of the spring a is constructed in a curvilinear manner and extends toward the shank a to form a suitable stop for keeping'the sus? penderend I) in place. The shank a is formed with an aperture 0, which will permit of the curved end a being forced through the shank a when pressure is brought upon the spring a so the suspender-end b can be removed from the seat or hook 0, The nor- SerialNo.103,392. (No model.)
mal position of the spring a is against the inner face of the hook o The end a when the spring is in its normal position lies above the path of the Suspender-end b, so as to confine it in the seat or hook or, in other words, prevent the end I) rising up out of or unhooking-itself from the hook 0, The top of the body portion a is provided with a suitable out or slit d for the passage of the suspenderstrap or band portion e. By such slit or cut a bar or cross-piece a is formed at the top of the body portion a. This'cross-bar a is bent away or made to lie outside or clear of the plane of the body portion a of the castoff, so that the strap e does not have to be bent to pass through the slit d, but can be kept in the same plane, and thus run along or over the shoulders of the wearer. The bar a is also bent downwardly or toward the hook 013, so as to extend somewhat past or overlap the slit d or the lower rim of the slit, so as to hold the strap against the body portion.
The shank a is provided .with lateral lugs a at its junction with the body portion a. These lugs a form stops to prevent the susponder-strap when lying about the cast-0E from slipping down or onto the hook or shank a.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cast-off consisting of a body portion provided at its lower end with a depending spring and at its upper end with a bar projecting therefrom and lying clear of the plane of said body portion, and a shank integral with the lower end of said body por tion, terminating at its lower end in a hook and provided with an opening through which is adapted to extend the free end of said spring, said shank further provided at its top with laterally-extending stops or lugs.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUDOLPH F. BARTEL. Witnesses:
CHAS. E. POENSGEN, E. F. KAS'IENHUBER.
