Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUISE G. BELTRAN SHARINGHOUSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Hat-Pins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters. of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements in ladies hat wear and particularly a device for forming a safety appliance within the crown of a womans hat, for holding the hat pin in the hat without danger of its prodding or injuring any person who might come in contact with the wearer and one which will retain the hat pin in the hat without danger of its fallingout or becoming lost.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure l is a dotted outline of a WOI1121Il f hat showing my improved device in full therein. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of a cork casing showing a supporting wire embedded therein. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a retaining spring and holder therefor. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the hat pin.

Referring now more particularly to the characters on the drawings, 1 designates a bottom retaining band of wire While 2 are supporting wires projecting therefrom. These wires 2 hold two spaced wires 3 and 4 a distance above the wire 1 and then said wires 2 project into a cork casing or crown 5 provided with a plurality of holes 6 which make the same light and at the same time admit sufficient ventilation to the wearer. Interposed between the wires 3 and 4; and sewed thereto by threads 7 is a coiled spring 8.

' In practice the hat pin 9 to be used with my improved device is provided with an enlarged end or point 10. When this hat pin is to be used with my improved device it is projected through the hat and the spring 8 and then after it is projected through the hair of the wearer it is embedded in the cork casing 5 which holds it securely preventing the point from injuring any person. The enlarged point 10 prevents the hat pin from falling out of engagement with the spring 8 or hat 11 and thus it will be seen that by the use of my improved device the hat pin can not drop out or become lost.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described comprising a bottom ring, upwardly projecting members supported on said ring, two spaced wires supported on said upwardly projecting members, a spring member held by said two spaced wires and adapted to receive a hat pin; a cork casing held in the upper ends of said supported members and adapted to receive the point of said hat pin, as described.
