Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9,1912.
Application filed August 16, 1911. Serial No. 644,340.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, MAMIE N. HOPPE, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Hesperia, in the county of Oceana and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ,Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in presses, and has particular reference to an improved press adapted for use in making cottage cheese.
The leading object of my invention is the provision of an improved device which may be readily attached to an ordinary quart measure and which will form from said quart measure an efficient press for use in making cottage cheese or which may be readily removed from the measure to leave the measure in condition for use as a measure.
The further object of my invention is the provision of an attachment of this character of improved means for adjusting the pressure lever relative to the piston rod for applying the pressure.
Other objects and advantages of my improved press will be readily apparent by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific structure shown and described within the scope of my claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a measure equipped with my attachment. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of the measure with my attachment in raised position. Fig. 3 represents a similar view with the attachment in depressed position. Fig. 4 represents a top plan view. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the lever portion of the attachment removed from the measure, and Fig. 6 represents a fragmentary sectional View on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the cylindrical body portion of an ordinary quart measure having at one side the handle 2 and having projecting from its upper edge the usual pouring lip 3. Said lip 3 has the apertures 4 formed therein to receive the outwardly curving ends 5 of'the handle lever members 6 which are connected at their termination of their downwardly curving portion 7 by the resilient ring 8.
its upper portion formed with the ratchet teeth 12. The bar 11 is of sufficient length to project upward from the measure when the piston 10 is resting on the bottom of the measure, and the lever arms 6 are adapted to engage certain of the ratchet teeth 12, the bar extending upward between the two arms 6.
To clamp the arms 6 in engagement with any desired ratchet teeth 12 according to the distance it is desired to force the piston into the measure, I pivotally secure to one of the arms 6 the curved finger 13 adapted to be swung to cause the other arm to pass through the split 14 thereof, when the ring will hold the two arms together and in tight engagement with the bar 11.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanymg drawings, the construction and use of my improved cottage cheese pressing attachment for measures will be readily apparent, and it will be seen that I have provided a simple and efficient device which may be easily attached to an ordinary measure and which may be removed from the measure when desired by merely swinging the lever upward out of engagement with the bar 11 and then springing the arms of the lever together until the portions 5 have been withdrawn from the apertures 4 when the measure may be used in the ordinary manner.
I claim:
1. The combination with a cylindrical receptacle having a pouring lip with apertures formed therein, of arms having curved ends for engagement in the apertures, a piston fitting in the receptacle, a plunger bar projecting upward from the piston and having a ratchet portion, and means for clamping the arms againstthe ratchet portion of the bar.
2. The combination with a cylindrical receptacle having a pouring lip, of a pair of arms removably pivoted thereto, a piston within the receptacle, an upwardly projecting bar carried by the piston and means carried by one of the arms for engaging the other arm for clamping said arm in adjusted position on the bar;
3. The combination With a measure having a pouring lip, said lip having apertures formed therein, of arms connected at one end and having their other ends flaring and engaged in the apertures of the lip, a plunger bar having a ratchet portlon and hearing a piston, and a curved finger pivoted to in the presence of tWo Witnesses. V.
