FRANK W. RIESENBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
JAR-OPENING WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed June 4, 1914. Serial No. 842,836.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. Rrssnn- BERG, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in J ar- Opening lVrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to jar opening wrenches and is of particular service in the formation of a wrench that is adapted to grip the covers of Mason jars to effect their removal.
My invention will be fully understood .by a description of the preferred embodiment thereof illustrated by the accompanying drawing and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench whose jaws are indicated in engagement with the cover of a Mason jar, this cover being shown in section; Fig. 2 is an elevation, partially in section, on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 except that the jaws are indicated in an open position; and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on line H of Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The curved jaw 1 has an inner surface, the
gripping surface, which is substantially of the external curvature of the base of the annular groove 2 of the cover or cap 3 which is shown in position upon a Mason jar at. The curved jaw 5 also has an inner surface, a gripping surface, which is also substantially of the external curvature of the base of said annular groove 2. The jaws 1 and 5 are permanently hinged by means of a hinging bolt or rivet 6 whereby the jaws may be opened and closed. An operating lever 7 is hinged at its inner end to the jaw 1 by means of a hinging bolt or rivet 8. A link 9 is pivoted to the lever near the inner end of the lever handle 10, this link being brought into hinged connection with the lever by means of a hinging bolt or rivet 11. The jaw 5 has a tangential continuation 12 that is brought into hinged connection with the other end of the link 9 by means of a hinging bolt or rivet 13. One end of the link 9 is desirably superposed upon the lever 7 while the jaw continuation 12 is preferably superposed upon the link, that is the link is desirably located between the planes of the handle lever 7 and jaw 5 whereby the end of the jaw extension 12 may be well superposed above the lever 7 in the operation of the device so that there may be a wide range of adjustment between the jaws 1 and 5. In order to enable the jaws to enter the top groove 2 of the Mason jar cover 3 the jaws 1 and 5 are made thin and beveled on their inner sides to present narrow edge portions that are adapted to enter said groove 2 and in order further to insure the effective entry of the gripping edges of the jaws 1 and 5 within the groove 2, these edges may be rounded 011' as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2 at 15. By this construction the jaws may readily modify the shape of the cover at its groove 2 to enable extended gripping engagement of the jaws with the cover, this operation being permitted since the groove 2 always overlies the jar 1, there thus being no material opposition offered by the jar to compressing action exerted by the jaws upon the cap.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following A jar opening wrench including two integral jaws in hinged connection with each other, these jaws being beveled on their inner sides to form narrow jar cover engaging edges; a handle lever directly pivotally connected with one of the jaws; and a link connecting the handle lever with the other jaw and having connection with the handle lever between the free end of the handle lever and the connection of the said lever with the first aw, said link lying between the planes of the handle lever and the second jaw to permit the end of the second jaw that is connected with the link to overlie the handle lever.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this second day of June, A. D.,
FRANK W. RIESENBERG. Witnesses: G. L. ORoeG, E'l'lA L. WHITE.
