Description
R. P. WILLIAMS.
PRESS FOR PLOW SCRAPERS. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 5; 1917.
l 268,655 Patented June 4, 1918.
alga,
INVENTOR EJLRWZZZZEZZZQ ATTORNEX WITNESSES ROBERT P. WILLIAMS, 0F WINDER, GEORGIA.
PRESS FOR PLOW-SCRAPERS.
Application filed. June 5, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT P. lViLLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winder, in the county of Barrow and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Presses for Plow-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to presses, and more particularly to that type adapted for bending farm implements, such as scrapers, cutters or the like.
The primary object of the present invention contemplates the production of a press of the above stated character which is simple in construction, durable and efficient in use and may be manipulated in a simple and expeditious manner to facilitate the bending of the farm implement, and wherein the table is provided with a stud, which, upon the placing of the implement upon the table, will extend through an opening formed in such implement for the purpose of accurately retaining the implement on such table.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of arts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the press in a partial open position with a scraper positioned thereon;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the press shown in open position.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in'which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, the character 5 denotes the press generally, which may be constructed of any material found desirable, and primarily employed for the bending or pressing of scrapers, cutters or the like such as are commonly used on plows and similar agricultural implements.
To this end, the press 5 embodies a base plate 6 provided along the front edge thereof with a flattened attaching flange 7 provided with spaced openings 8 through which suit- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1918.
Serial No. 172,940.
table 10 tapering downwardly in a direction toward the attaching flange 7 for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully set forth. The table is provided with a pair of smooth faces 11 merging in a direction toward the centrally located inclined block. 12. The block 12 is positioned at right angles with respect to the faces 11 of the table, and the side walls of the blockincline downwardly and outwardly in a direction toward the faces 11 of the table, consequently, after the squared stud 13 is projected through the opening 141, of the scraper A, and pressure is brought to bear upon the material forming the scraper while in a heated condition, the block 12 will provide the scraper with a substantially U-shaped clip 15 for connection of the scraper to the agricultural implement in a practical manner. Centrally located on the flange 7 in transverse alinement with the block 12 is an apertured bearing 16 through which the pin 17 projects, and likewise through the spaced cars 18 of the top or movable member 19, serving to pivotally connect the movable member to the base plate for a vertical swinging movement.
The top or movable member 19 comprises a shoe 20 having a convexed outer face 21, straight opposite end walls 22 and the inner face 23 of the shoe tapers from the opposite end walls in a direction toward the center to conform to the inclination or angle of the smooth faces 11 of the table. In order to permit a snug engagement of the confronting faces of the table and shoe upon the latter assuming a closed position, I provide in the inner face 23 a depression 24-, and the bottom wall forming the depression is centrally formed with a squared opening 25, the block 12 fitting in the depression 24, while the pin 17 projects into the squared opening 26 upon the bending action of the scraper or cutter. At this point, I desire to have it understood that this press may be so constructed to facilitate the simultaneous bending of two or more scrapers or cutters, if desired.
The block 12 is provided with a concaved end 26 with which the conveXed lip of the shoe, designated by the character 27, snugly engages for guiding the downward movement of the shoe to accurately position the shoe upon the material being bent, in order that each of the wings B of the scraper A may be given a perfect bend. A socket 28 is provided on the convexed outer face of the shoe along the transverse center thereof in which is inserted a hand lever 29 for operating the shoe to open and closed position. The side walls forming the socket 28 are separated at their outer ends, providing the spaced ears 18 of the shoe. To assure against any accidental movement or displacement of the scraper from the table, during the bending or pressing thereof use is made of a pairof spaced converging projections 30 formed on the outer edge of the table at points to opposite sides of the block 12.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the'art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together. with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that ranged table formed contiguous therewith,
a block on said table and centrally provided with a projection, a movable member connected with the base plate for vertical swinging movement and formed on the under face and centrally thereof with a depression having an opening through which the said projection passes, a convexed lip formed on one edge of the movable member and adapted to engage with one edge of the block upon the closing of the movable member to clamping position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature.
ROBERT P. WILLIAMS.
