Abstract

Natural hydrocarbon gas is stored in a plurality of heat insulated containers at a temperature at least 20‹ F. below ambient temperature or 32‹ F. whichever is the lower and at a superatmospheric pressure sufficient to increaseits density three to four hundred fold without introducing liquid phase into the system. At storage temperatures above the critical temperature but less than the highest temperature at which both liquid and gas can coexist irrespective of pressure and defined as the cricondentherm, the operating pressure is at least 50 p.s.i. above the bubble-point dew-point pressure at the chosen temperature. At storage temperatures greater than the cricondentherm the minimum operating pressure is at least 50 p.s.i. above the cricondentherm pressure. The maximum storage pressure at temperatures less than the temperature corresponding to the maximum pressure at which liquid and gas can co-exist irrespective of temperature and defined as the cricondenbar is not more than 500 p.s.i. above the bubble-point dew-point pressure at the selected temperature. At temperatures above the cricondenbar, the maximum pressure is maintained constant at not more than 500 p.s.i. above the cricondenbar pressure. In all cases, the storage temperature is above the critical temperature of methane.
