Abstract

1370348 Thermal insulation for cryogenic containers MARTIN MARIETTA CORP 13 Oct 1971 [16 Oct 1970] 47603/71 Heading F4P In a thermal insulation construction lining the interior of a cold liquefied gas, e.g. natural gas storage container wall 12, Fig. 1, and comprising a plurality of discrete cells 18 each having a cover 20 at their liquid contacting side apertured at 22 for providing a stable gas-liquid interface 24, Fig. 3, means is provided whereby the liquid adjacent the cells is not below its boiling point whereby the formation of said interface 24 is controlled. Said means may comprise a porous thermal barrier 30, e.g. cork which allows passage of liquid which when it reaches cover 20 forms a layer L1 free of connection currents and is at about its boiling point. In a modification the layer 30 is dispensed with' and the cells are charged with a gas, e.g. helium other than the vapour of the stored liquid whereby the saturation pressure of the liquid in the cells corresponds to the partial pressure of the vapour phase of the liquid within the cells.
