Abstract

A NEW BIMETALLIC CATALYST, RHENIUM-TIN PREPARED BY THE SOL-GEL CHEMICAL MIXING METHOD IS DEVELOPED FOR THE CONVERSION OF OLEIC ACID TO 9-O1 CTADECENE-1-O1 WITH APPRECIABLE YIELD UNDER CONDITIONS MILDER THAN THOSE USED CURRENTLY BY THE INDUSTRY. THE CATALYST IS PREPARED BY FIRST DISSOLVING SUITABLE COMPOUNDS OF RHENIUM, TIN WITH PRECURSORS OF SUPPORT (COMPOUNDS OF SILICONE, ALUMINIUM OR TITANIUM) FOLLOWED BY GELATION BY HYDROLYSIS WITH WATER AND FINALLY DRIED UNDER VACCUM. ACTIVATION OF THE DRIED MATERIAL IN A STREAM OF HYDROGEN AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESULTED IN THE FINAL CATALYST, HYDROGENATION OF OLEIC ACID WITH THE ACTIVATED CATALYST THUS OBTAINED CAN BE CARRIED OUT AT 250?C WITH PRESSURE OF ABOUT 56-100 KG/CM2 TO OBTAIN APPRECIATE YIELD OF 9-OCTADECENE-1-O1. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE RHENIUM-CATALYST IS ALSO CAPABLE OF PRESERVING THE UNSATURATION DURING THE HYDROGENATION PROCESS. THIS INVENTION IS AN IMPROVEMENT IN TERMS OF OPERATION SAFETY WHEN COMPARED WITH CONVENTIONAL HYDROGENATION WHICH REQUIRES HIGHER PRESSURE.
