1468412 Producing diols GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 May 1974 [30 May 1973] 20491/74 Heading C2C An acetate-free diol is made by alcoholysing a diol acetate or a mixture of diol acetates, by feeding the acetate, together with a C 1-5 alcohol, having a boiling point below that of the diol, and, as catalyst, an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkali metal alcoholate, into a reactor at a temperature, at which the alcoholysis will take place and at which the alcohol and formed alcohol acetate will volatilize off, but below that at which the diol volatilizes, and continuously removing the alcohol and alcohol acetate vapours from one part, e.g. the upper part of the reactor and liquid diol from another part, e.g. the lower part of the reactor. The preferred diol acetates are butane diol acetates and mixtures of butane diol and propane diol acetates.
