삽입된 데이터의 보안성은 복사 검출 기술의 이용을 통해 향상될 수 있다. 복사 검출 기술은 삽입된 보안 데이터를 가지고 있는(bearing) 오브젝트의 복사가 위조되었는지를 검출하는데 이용될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 스캐너 또는 복사 기계를 이용하여 삽입된 보안 데이터를 가지고 있는 이미지의 고품질 복사를 만들고, 그다음, 위조 제품 또는 그 패키징 상의 이미지를 인쇄함으로써 위조가 인증 시스템을 교묘히 빠져나가도록 시도될 수 있다.

복사 검출의 다른 형태는 예측 가능하지만 서로 다른 방식으로 한 제품에서 다음 제품으로 워터마크 패이로드의 부분 또는 전부를 스크램블링 또는 암호화하는 것이다. 이것은 종자(seed)로서 어떤 다른 제품 특정 속성 또는 제품 번호를 이용하여 패이로드를 스크램블링하는 암호 해시를 이용하여 성취될 수 있다.
