Description
Claims (12)
- 소정의 간극으로 대향하는 2개의 기판과, 상기 2개의 기판의 대향면 측에 각각 형성된 전극과, 상기 전극 상에 형성된 수직 배향막과, 상기 간극에 밀봉된 마이너스의 유전이방성(誘電異方性)을 갖는 액정을 갖는 액정표시장치에 있어서,상기 전극 사이에 전압이 인가되었을 때에 상기 액정의 배향 벡터 필드의 특이점이 소정 위치에 형성되도록 제어하는 특이점 제어부를 갖고,상기 특이점 제어부는,상기 액정 분자의 장축 방위가 동일점으로 향하는 제 1 특이점과, 상기 액정 분자의 일부가 다른 방향으로 향하는 제 2 특이점을 인접하여 형성하고,형성된 상기 특이점을 적어도 이용하여 상기 액정을 배향 제어하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 1항에 있어서,상기 2개의 기판의 외면에 각각 설치되고 편광축이 직교하는 2개의 편광판을 가지며,상기 특이점 제어부는,전압 인가 시에 상기 특이점 제어부 주변의 상기 액정 분자의 장축(長軸) 방위가 상기 기판면으로부터 보아 상기 편광판의 편광축에 대하여 45°의 각도로 되는 액정 도메인의 면적 비율이 증가하도록 상기 특이점을 형성하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 2항에 있어서,상기 특이점 제어부는,인접하는 상기 제 1 특이점과 상기 제 2 특이점을 연결하는 가상(假想) 직선을 사이에 두고 인접하는 액정 도메인의 상기 액정 분자의 장축 방위가 전압 인가 시에서 상기 가상 직선에 대하여 45°로 되도록 상기 액정의 배향을 제어하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 3항에 있어서,인접하는 상기 제 1 특이점끼리를 연결하는 가상 직선과 평행하게 배향 규제 부재를 배치하고,상기 배향 규제 부재를 사이에 두고 인접하는 액정 도메인의 상기 액정 분자의 장축 방위가 전압 인가 시에서 상기 가상 직선에 대하여 90°로 되도록 상기 액정의 배향을 제어한 영역도 동시에 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 3항에 있어서,상기 특이점 제어부는,상기 특이점 제어부 사이에서 상기 가상 직선에 따르는 1개의 암선(暗線)을 형성하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 5항에 있어서,상기 특이점 제어부는, 전압 인가 시에, 상기 특이점 제어부 사이에서 상기 가상 직선에 적어도 직교하는 방향의 전계 분포에 왜곡을 발생시켜 상기 암선의 폭 확장을 억제하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 1항 내지 제 6항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,특이점 제어부 또는 인접하는 상기 특이점 사이의 가상 직선 또는 특이점 제어부 및 인접하는 상기 특이점 사이의 가상 직성 상의 모두에는 적어도 한쪽의 상기 전극 상에 형성된 돌기를 갖고,상기 돌기 상층의 액정 분자는 전압 인가에 의해 상기 특이점을 중심으로 하여 경사지는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 1항 내지 제 6항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,특이점 제어부 또는 인접하는 상기 특이점 사이의 가상 직선 또는 특이점 제어부 및 인접하는 상기 특이점 사이의 가상 직선 상의 모두에는 적어도 한쪽의 상기 전극면 내에 전극 재료가 형성되어 있지 않은 무전극 영역을 갖고,상기 무전극 영역 상층의 액정 분자는 전압 인가에 의해 특이점을 중심으로 하여 경사지는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 소정의 간극으로 대향하는 2개의 기판과, 한쪽의 상기 기판에 형성된 화소 전극과, 상기 다른 쪽의 기판에 형성되어 상기 화소 전극과 대향하는 대향 전극과, 상기 화소 전극 및 대향 전극 상에 형성된 수직 배향막과, 상기 간극에 밀봉된 마이너스의 유전이방성을 갖는 액정을 갖는 액정표시장치에 있어서,상기 액정의 배향 벡터 필드의 특이점을 상기 화소 전극 외주(外周) 둘레의 소정 위치에 고정시켜 형성하는 특이점 형성부를 갖고,상기 특이점 형성부는,액정 분자의 장축 방위가 동일점으로 향하는 제 1 특이점과, 액정 분자의 일부가 다른 방향으로 향하는 제 2 특이점을 형성하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 9항에 있어서,상기 특이점 형성부는,상기 화소 전극 외부 주위에 배치된 버스 라인 상에 상기 특이점을 형성하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
- 제 9항 또는 제 10항에 있어서,상기 특이점 형성부는,상기 화소 전극과 상기 버스 라인의 간극부에 상기 특이점을 형성하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
