Abstract
본 발명은 고속 회전시 효과적으로 작동할 수 있는 자기 기록 데이터 기억 장치(magnetic recording data storage device)에 사용하기 위한 스핀들 모터(spindle motor)에 대하여 기재한다. 스핀들 모터는 개선된 윤활제(lubricant)로 코팅된 볼 베어링(ball bearing)을 가진다. 개선된 윤활제는 알칼리 수산화스테아레이트(alkali hydroxystearate), 에스테르 오일(ester oil), 디알킬디페닐아민(dialkyldiphenylamine) 및 디알킬디티오카바메이트(dialkyldithiocarbamate)를 포함한다. 윤활제는 모터의 회전 동작을 개선한다.
Description
본 발명은 개선된 윤활제를 가지는 자기 기록 장치용 스핀들 모터에 관한 것이다.
현재의 디지털 자기 기록 데이터 기억 장치 산업의 성장 속도는 기록 밀도 및 전송 속도 면에서는 매년 크게 증가하고 있으며 또 탐색 시간(seek time)면에서는 매년 크게 감소하고 있다. 이러한 성장 속도(growth rate)를 계속 유지하기 위해서는 기록 장치 산업이 자기 기록 장치의 설계 및 동작 면에서 많은 큰 변화를 이룩해야만 한다. 데이터 저장용 디지털 자기 기록 장치는 박막 자기 기록 디스크, 디스크 회전용 스핀들 모터 및 디스크 상에서 정보를 판독하고 또 기록하기 위하여 회전하는 디스크의 표면을 따라 또는 그 표면 상부에서 이동하는 헤드 또는 변환기(transducer)를 포함한다. 통상 박막 자기 기록 디스크는 기판, 코발트-기초형(cobalt-based) 금속 합금과 같은 자성층(magnetic layer), 보호용 비정질 탄소층(protective amorphous carbon layer) 및 탄소 상부피복(overcoat) 상에 배치된 과(過)불화폴리에테르(perfluoropolyether)층을 포함한다. 자기 기록 디스크는 스핀들 모터 상에 장착되며, 이러한 스핀들 모터가 이 디스크를 고속으로 회전시킨다. 통상, 스핀들 모터는 (a) 하우징(housing)에 부착된 스핀들 샤프트(spindle shaft), (b) 상기 샤프트 상에서 회전 가능하도록 장착된 스핀들 허브(spindle hub) 및 (c) 상기 샤프트 및/또는 허브 내에 형성된 마찰면(race)에 위치하며, 윤활제가 피복된 볼 베어링을 포함한다.
헤드 또는 변환기는 작동 시 회전 디스크(rotating disk)에 의해 발생하는 공기 쿠션(cushion)에 의해 디스크의 데이터 표면에 인접하게 지지되는(supported) 공기 베어링 표면(air bearing surface)을 가지는 캐리어(carrier) 또는 슬라이더(slider)에 부착된다.
또한, 기록 장치는 판독 또는 기록 동작 동안 헤드를 디스크 상의 소망(所望) 위치로 이동시키기 위하여 캐리어에 접속된 위치 설정용 액츄에이터(positioning actuator)를 포함한다.
종래의 자기 기록 장치들은 약 3,600 RPM 내지 7,000 RPM 이상의 회전 속도로 작동된다. 예를 들어, 7,500 RPM보다 큰 고속 회전으로 디스크 드라이브가 정상 동작(normal operation)하는 경우, 스핀들 베어링의 그리스 윤활제(grease lubricant)의 화학적 분해(chemical breakdown)로 인한 음향학적 진동(acoustic vibration)이 스핀들 모터에서 짧은 시간 내에 발생한다는 사실이 알려져 있다. 음향학적 진동이 발생된 상태에서 기록 장치를 계속 작동시키면 스핀들 베어링이 기계적으로 고장나게 된다.
본 발명의 목적은 수용 불가능한 음향학적 진동을 발생시키지 않으면서, 고속 회전에서 오랜 시간 동안 작동하는 개선된 윤활제를 구비한 스핀들 모터를 제공하는 것이다.

본 발명은 데이터를 자기적으로 판독 및 기록하기 위해 디지털 자기 기록 장치에서 사용되는 개선된 고성능 스핀들 모터에 관한 것이다.
도 1 및 도 2는 자기 판독 디스크 드라이버를 도시한다. 자기 기록 디스크(2)는 허브(6)와 스핀들 모터(4)에 의해 회전된다. 통상, 디스크는 기판, 금속 자기층, 선택적인 탄소층 및 결합형(bonded) 또는 비결합형(nonbonded) 고분자층(polymeric layer), 예를 들어 과(過)불화폴리에테르(perfluoropolyether)층을 포함한다.

디스크 드라이브가 동작하는 동안, 스핀들 모터(4)는 디스크 (2)를 일정한 속도로 화살표 (22) 방향으로 회전시키며, 통상 직선 운동 또는 회전 운동 코일 모터(coil motor)인 액츄에이터(12)는 디스크(2)의 표면을 가로질러 통상 반지름 방향으로 슬라이더(10)을 이동시킴으로써, 판독/기록 헤드가 디스크(2) 상의 상이한 데이터 트랙들에 접근할 수 있게 된다.
도 3을 참조하면, 헤드 (20, 22)들은 암 (26, 28)과 서스펜션 (30, 32)에 의하여 액츄에이터(24)에 접속된다. 디스크(34)는 샤프트(40) 상에 회전 가능하도록 장착된 허브 또는 회전자(rotor)(38) 상에 지지된다. 샤프트(40)는 하우징(42) 상에 지지된다. 환형 링 자석(annular ring magnet)의 일부분인 복수의 영구 자석(예들 들어, (60, 62))들이 허브 (38)에 부착된다. 고정자(stator)(64)는 하우징 (42) 상에 지지되며, 복수의 축 기둥(axial post)(66, 68)과 상기 기둥 주변에 배치된 코일 (70, 72)를 가진다. 자석 (60, 62)들은 바람직하게는 네오디뮴-철-보론(neodymuim-iron-boron) 또는 사마리움-코발트(samarium-cobalt)와 같은 큰 모멘트(high moment)를 가지는 자성 재료로 형성된다. 환형 링 자석은 링 둘레에서 바깥쪽 및 안쪽 반지름 방향을 가리키도록 교대로 변하는 자기장을 가지는 복수의 자석 부분(magnet section)들을 포함한다. 전류가 고정자의 각각의 코일에 인가되는 경우, 영구 자석 부분을 끌어당기거나 밀어내는 자기장이 유도되어 허브의 회전을 일으킨다.
환형 마찰면(annular race)이 허브(38)와 샤프트(40) 사이에 형성된다. 적합한 환형 마찰면은 샤프트(40)에 부착되어 그 일부를 이루는 내부 마찰면(44, 46)과 허브(38)에 부착되어 그 일부를 이루는 외부 마찰면(48, 50)을 포함한다. 볼 베어링 (52, 54, 56, 58)들은 마찰면 (44, 46, 48, 50)에 의해 형성되는 환형 마찰 트랙(annular race track) 내에 배치된다. 도 4는 샤프트(80), 및 디스크를 지지하기 위한 립(lip)(84)를 구비한 허브(82)를 포함하는 브러쉬 없는 허브 내장형 D.C. 스핀들 모터를 도시한다. 샤프트는 내부 마찰면(86, 88)을 포함하고, 허브는 외부 마찰면(90, 92)을 포함한다. 영구 자석 부분 (94, 96)들은 허브(82)에 부착된다. 고정자의 코일 (98, 100)들은 샤프트(80)에 부착된다. 다른 적합한 스핀들 모터는 미국 특허 제 5,502,605호, 제 4,841,393호, 제 5,448,119호, 제 4,841,393호 및 제 5,296,981호에 개시된 바와 같이 본 기술 분야의 당업자들에게 잘 알려져 있으며, 상기 특허들의 개시 내용은 본 명세서에 참조되어 본 발명의 일부를 이룬다.
환형 마찰면은 볼 베어링을 코팅하는 특정한 윤활제 그리스로 채워진다. 통상, 윤활제 그리스는 점도 증가제(thickener), 오일, C1-10알킬디페닐아민 및 C1-10알킬디티오카바메이트(alkyldithiocarbamate)를 포함한다.
윤활제의 제 1 성분은 오일이다. 적합한 오일에는 에스테르 오일(예를 들어, 합성 에스테르 오일(synthetic ester oil)) 및 광물질 오일(mineral oil)(예를 들어, 폴리알파 올레핀 오일(polyalpha olefin oil))이 포함된다. 바람직한 오일은 에스테르 오일이다. 이러한 에스테르 오일은 사슬형 가지(chain branching)를 가질 수 있으며, 또 반응하지 않은(unreacted) 수산화기(hydroxyl group)를 포함할 수 있다. 적합한 에스테르 오일은 디-C1-10알킬(예를 들어, 디옥틸(dioctyl), 디부틸(dibutyl), 디에틸헥실(diethylhexyl)) 세바식산(sebacate), C1-10카르복실산(C1-10carboxylic acid)의 펜타에리스리톨 테트라 에스테르(pentaerythritol tetra ester), 트리 C1-6알킬 및 트리메틸롤 프로판 트리헵타노에이트(trimethylol propane triheptanoate)들이다. 적합한 에스테르 오일은 C(CH2OOC(CH2)XCH3)4(여기서 x는 1-10임)인 구조식을 가진다. 바람직한 에스테르 오일은 펜타에리스리톨 테트라펜타노에이트(pentaerythritol tetrapentanoate)이다.
윤활제의 제 2 성분은 C1-10알킬 디아릴아민(diarylamine)이다. 적합한 아민들은 C2-10알킬화 디페닐 아민 C2-10및 알킬화 페닐 나프틸아민이다. 바람직한 아민은 디C2-10알킬디페닐아민, 예를 들어 디옥틸 디페닐아민(dioctyl diphenylamine)이다.
윤활제의 제 3 성분은 전이 금속 디-C1-10알킬 디티오카바메이트(transition metal di-C1-10alkyl dithiocarbamate)이다. 적절한 카바메이트는 아연 디아밀디티오카바메이트(zinc diamyldithiocarbamate)이다. 카바메이트로 적합한 다른 전이 금속은 구리, 주석(tin), 안티몬(antimony) 및 카드뮴(cadmium)이다.
윤활제의 마지막 성분은 점도 증가제이다. 적합한 점도 증가제는 지방산염(fatty acid salt) 및 폴리우레아(polyurea)와 같은 본 기술 분야의 당업자들에게 잘 알려진 것들이다. 적합한 지방산 계면 활성제(surfactant)에는 경우에 따라서는 하나 이상의 수산화 치환기(hydroxy substituent)를 가지는 알칼리(alkali) 또는 알칼리성(alkaline)[예를 들면, 리튬(lithium), 나트륨(sodium), 칼슘(calcium), 바륨(barium)) C10-C26(바람직하게는 C16-20) 지방산염이 포함된다. 바람직한 치환기는 리튬 수산화스테아린산염(lithium hydroxystearate)이다. 다른 치환기에는 알칼리 팔미틴산염(alkali palmitate) 및 알칼리 이코산염(alkali icosanate)(C20)가 포함된다.
바람직한 윤활제는 아민 및 카바메이트 성분의 몰 양(molar amount)이 거의 같다. 예를 들어
값은 약 0.40 내지 0.60, 바람직하게는 약 0.45 내지 0.55, 더욱 바람직하게는 약 0.48 내지 0.52, 가장 바람직하게는 약 0.5이다. 아민과 카바메이트의 오일 1리터당 바람직한 전체 몰수는 약 0.015 이상, 보다 바람직하게는 약 0.02 이상이고 또 약 0.15 이하, 바람직하게는 0.10 이하, 더욱 바람직하게는 약 0.05 이하이다.
윤활제 성분들의 상승적 상호작용(synergistic interaction)은 스핀들 모터가 성능 저하 없이 장시간 동안 고속 동작할 수 있도록 한다. 본 기술 분야의 당업자들에게 잘 알려진 산화방지제(antioxidant), 금속 불활성화제(metal deactivator), 마모 방지제(antiwear agent), 부식 방지제(corrosion inhibitor) 및 본 기술 분야의 당업자들에게 잘 알려진 다른 첨가제(additives)와 같은 다른 소량 성분(minor component)(예를 들어, 5 중량 % 미만)들이 역시 부가될 수 있다.
다음의 실시예들은 본 발명에 대한 상세한 설명으로 기술된다. 상세한 설명은 앞서 설명된 발명의 보다 일반적인 설명의 범위 내에 속하며, 예시적인 목적으로 기술된다. 실시예들은 단지 설명 목적을 위하여 제시되며, 본 발명의 범위를 제한하는 것이 아니다.
[실시예]
여러 가지 윤활제 조성물(composition)들의 안전성을 시험하였다. 각각의 조성물은 다음의 성분, 즉 아연 디아밀디티오카바메이트(zinc diamyldithiocarbamate), 디옥틸 디페닐 아민, 및 에스테르 오일[펜타에리스리톨 테트라 펜타노에이트, 헥사노에이트(hexanoate) 및 헵타노에이트(heptanoate)의 혼합물]을 포함한다. 첨가제를 포함하는 5 그램의 오일 조성물이 50 ml 파이렉스 비커(pyrex beaker)에 넣고, 주석 호일(tin foil)로 덮었다. 주석 호일 중앙의 5 mm 구멍을 통하여 오일 샘플을 주기적으로 취하여 분석하였다. 몇몇 검사에서는 깨끗한 볼 베어링을 오일 내에 담갔다. 조성물은 자외선 분광 분석 방법으로 모니터링되었는데, 200-300 nm 사이에서의 흡수 피크로 결함을 검출한다. 그 결과들이 표 1에 도시되어 있다. 상기 표 1의 결과로부터, 카바메이트 및 아민 성분이 동일한 몰 양을 가지는 조성물들이 안전성 면에서 상승적으로 개선된 특성을 나타냄을 알 수 있다.

본 발명이 개시하는 스핀들 모터는 오랜 시간 동안 수용 불가능한 음향학적 진동을 발생시키지 않으면서, 고속 회전에서 오랜 시간 동안 작동할 수 있다.

- 샤프트(shaft),회전자(rotor), 그리고상기 샤프트와 상기 회전자 사이에 삽입되고, 점도 증가제(thickener), 오일, C1-10알킬 디아릴 아민(alkyl diaryl amine), 및 전이 금속 C1-10알킬 디티오카바메이트(transition metal C1-10alkyl dithiocarbamate)를 포함하는 윤활제로 코팅된 복수의 베어링을 포함하며,오일 1리터당 아민의 몰수와 오일 1리터당 아민 및 카바메이트의 몰수의 비율은 0.40 내지 0.60이며, 오일 1리터당 아민 및 카바메이트의 몰수는 0.015 이상인자기 기록 장치용 스핀들 모터.

- 제 6항에 있어서,상기 디티오카바메이트(dithiocarbamate)가 아연 디아밀디티오카바메이트(zinc diamyldithiocarbamate)인 스핀들 모터.
- 제 3항에 있어서,상기 에스테르 오일이 디-C1-10알킬 세바식산(alkyl sebacate), 펜타에리스리톨 테트라 C2-10알카노에이트(pentaerythritol tetra C2-10alkanoate), 트리멜리틴산(trimellitic acid)의 트리에스테르(triester) 또는 트리메틸롤 프로판 트리헵타노에이트(trimethylol propane triheptanoate)인 스핀들 모터.
- 제 8항에 있어서,상기 에스테르가 펜타에리스리톨 테트라 C2-8알카노에이트인 스핀들 모터.
- 샤프트,회전자, 그리고샤프트와 회전자 사이에 형성된 환형 마찰면 내에 삽입되고 리튬 수산화스테아린산(lithium hydroxystearate), 에스테르 오일(ester oil), 디옥틸 디페닐 아민(dioctyl diphenyl amine), 및 아연 디아밀 디티오 카바메이트(zinc diamyl dithiocarbamate)를 포함하는 윤활제(lubricant)로 코팅된 복수의 베어링(bearing)을 포함하며,오일 1리터당 아민의 몰수와 오일 1리터당 아민 및 카바메이트의 몰수의 비율은 0.40 내지 0.60이며 오일 1리터당 아민 및 카바메이트의 몰수는 0.015 이상인 자기 기록 장치용 스핀들 모터.
- 제 10항에 있어서,상기 에스테르 오일이 펜타에리스리톨 테트라 C4-8알카노에이트(pentaerythritol tetra C4-8alkanoate)인 스핀들 모터.
