Abstract

PURPOSE:To inexpensively obtain strips of a silicon steel having excellent magnetic characteristics, by filling spaces between each coiled layer with powder of high melting point oxide when quenched strips of a silicon bearing steel are coiled, and then, by performing a high temperature annealing on the coiled strips. CONSTITUTION:A molten steel containing 2-8% Si as the main alloying element is quenched and solidified, and a thin strip having a 20-500mum thickness is formed. Powder of a high melting point oxide, such as Al2O3, etc., having a size distribution in which particles of <=2mum in diameter do not exceed 20% of the total particle number and those of 400mum in diameter do not exceed 20%, is supplied to the surface of the strip as a sealing off agent, and then, the strip is coiled. In this way, spaces between coiled layers of the strip are filled with the sealing agent. This coil is subjected to a high temperature annealing at >=1,000 deg.C, and agrgated structures accumulated in a direction (100)[oKl]or (100)[001]are formed. After the annealing is performed, the coil is uncoiled and the sealing agent is removed. This thin strip is advantageously used for materials for making iron cores.
