Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a cold-workable ductile wire or sheet material by very rapidly cooling a molten IIId group transition metal alloy contg. a large amt. of a rare earth metallic element in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to make the alloy amorphous.
CONSTITUTION: A molten IIId group transition metal alloy contg. a large amt. of a rare earth metallic element and represented by the formula, e.g., Gd60Co40 or Gd65Fe35 is made amorphous by a rapid cooling method such as a single roll method, a twin roll method or a centrifugal rapid cooling method as follows: the molten alloy is sprayed from a nozzle upon a rotary cooling body rotating at a high speed in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to manufacture an amorphous thin strip of high quality. This strip can be used as an invar alloy in case it is made of Gd60Co40 alloy, and a strip made of Fe60Tb40 alloy has very high magnetostriction and shows higher magnetostrication in a very weak magnetic field as compared to the crystal state. Thus, the strip is applicable to remarkably various uses.
