Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the fuel consumption by a method wherein a swirl adjusting valve is provided to adjust the distribution of quantity of suction air between a primary passage passing to a front valve to generate strong swirl and a secondary passage passing to a rear valve to generate weak swirl.
CONSTITUTION: A suction passage 4 in a suction manifold 3 is branched off in a cylinder head 1 into the primary passage 6 let to the front valve 5 and the secondary passage 8 led to the rear valve 7. A vertical shaft 17 is rotatably supported at the branched part of the suction passage 4 into the primary and secondary passages 6 and 8. The swirl adjusting valve 18 is fixed to said shaft 17. When the engine runs in high speed range, the swirl adjusting valve 18 is placed at the position 18' to generate weak swirl and, when the engine runs in low speed range, the swirl adjusting valve 18 is switched to the position 18" to generate strong swirl.
