Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve productivity and operability, by radical-polymerizing monomers in an aqueous solution in a vessel having a plurality of agitating shafts while granulating a hydrated gel-like polymer which forms as the polymerization progresses by a shearing force given by the rotation of the agitating shafts.
CONSTITUTION: In the radical polymerization, in an aqueous solution, of a monomer component which, when polymerized in an aqueous solution, forms a crosslinked structure and becomes a hydrated gel-like polymer, e.g., a monomer mixture comprising acrylic acid and ethylene glycol; said polymerization is carried out by using a polymerization vessel having a plurality of rotary agitating shafts, such as a double-arm kneader, preferably, in the presence of a nonionic surfactant and/or polyethylene glycol. The radical polymerization in an aqueous solution is continued while a hydrated gel-like polymer formed with the progress of the polymerization is granulated by a shearing force given by the rotation of the agitating shafts. This makes it possible to obtain hydrated gel-like polymer particles having excellent fluidity, uniform particle size and easiness in handling.
