Abstract

PURPOSE: To inexpensively produce an ion exchange resin by a simple process, by grafting acrylic acid onto the surfaces of a powdery polyvinyl chloride resin by radiation.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic acid is grafted onto a vinyl chloride resin, particle size about 20W200 mesh, polymerization degree about 200W300, by irradiating a mixture containing the vinyl chloride resin, acrylic acid and a reaction solvent with a radiation such as γ-rays or electron beam at about 0W60°C. As the reaction solvent, there is used a solvent which swells only the vinyl chloride type resin surfaces and dissolves acrylic acid, such as an ethylene dichloride/water/acrylic acid mixed solvent.
