CONSTITUTION:A potential on the surface of a photoreceptor drum 11 is detected with a surface potentiometer 26 having a probe 14, an operation circuit 24 calculates exposure and charging amount to obtain the best picture based on the potential, allowing to control a light source power supply 22 and charger power supply 23. If an output of the potentiometer 26 shows an abnormal value, it is judged that a trouble such as attached toner on the probe 14 takes place, and a switch 25 is selected. A specified reference potential is applied to the circuit 24 in place of the output of the potentiometer 26, and copying can be kept with a degree of video quality.
