Abstract

PURPOSE:To sufficiently prevent the degradation in image quality by providing a detector which detects the surface potential of a photoreceptor between a charger and developer provided near the photoreceptor, and controlling the reference potential for converging the potential detected with this device. CONSTITUTION:The potential of the surface of a photoreceptor which is uniformly charged by a charger (corona discharger) 6 is detected by a photoreceptor surface potential detector 8. When the detected potential deviates from the reference potential, a comparator 18 applies the control signal (g) to a corona discharge regulator 22 which in turn controls the potential to be applied from a power source 24 to a charger 26, thereby controlling the potential detected at the detecting position B in a manner as to be made equal to the reference potential. On the other hand, when an arithmetic circuit 28 receives the equil. signal (k) from the comparator 18, it applies the compensation potential (m) to a compensating circuit 16, which in turn changes the reference potential from b1 to b2. In this way the potential is returned to desired C1 at the detecting position C by determining the new reference potential, whereby the degradation in image quality is prevented.
