Abstract

PURPOSE: To achieve the speed-up and mechanization of molding of large-size castings and the reduction in high-grade sand by blowing the mixture of refractory particles and hardener and a slurry comprising a binder and coat base material simultaneously or alternately on the surface of a pattern.
CONSTITUTION: Refractory particles such as silica sand and a hardener or hardening accelerator such as paratoluene sulfonic acid are mixed. On the other hand, a binder such as water glass and coat base material such as MgO powder are mixed and are made into a slurry. This mixture and slurry are blown simultaneously or alternately onto the surface of the pattern or are projected whereby the pattern is formed. After this molding, ordinary backing sand is molded and the pattern is parted to prepare the mold. The molding of large-size castings may be mechanized by this method, and the molding officiency is improved. In addition, the layer thickness of the facing sand may be made thin; therefore, the sand of high quality is used without any increase in cost, and the defects of castings are decreased.
