Abstract
PURPOSE:To prepare a preform rod in a short-time collapsing efficiently, by reducing the internal pressure of a deposition tube to a value lower than the outside air pressure, and heating the tube while making the internal pressure of a jacket glass tube put on the deposition tube much lower than said pressure. CONSTITUTION:A quartz glass tube is used as a starting tube 21 by the CVD internal deposition method to form a deposition glass layer 22 on the inner wall thereof. One end at the outlet side of the raw material gas of the deposition tube 20 is closed, and a quartz rod 30 is connected to the closed end. The tube 20 is then covered with a jacket tube 40 of quartz glass, and the internal pressure of the tube 20 is kept lower than the outside air pressure. The internal pressure of the tube 40 is kept much lower than the pressure, and the tubes are heated by a burner 50. Thus, the tube 40 is first collapsed, and then the tube 20 is collapsed to form a uniformly round collapsed preform rod 60. A core 61 is formed by the collapsing of the glass layer 22 on the tube 20.
