Abstract
PURPOSE: To simply manufacture manganese phosphate by removing iron and other heavy metal hydroxides from slag as a byproduct of a ferromanganese manufacturing process and then removing calcium sulfate.
CONSTITUTION: A soln. of slag in sulfuric acid is neutralized to 6.0W8.5, preferably 7.0W7.5pH with alkali, dissolved divalent iron is oxidized, and the iron and other heavy metals such as Cr and Cu are simultaneously precipitated as hydroxides. After removing the precipitate by filtration, the filtrate is concd. just until manganese sulfate crystallizes, and calcium sulfate deposited is removed by filtration. The filtrate is further concd. to crystallize manganese sulfate, which is then separated and washed. The manganese sulfate crystals are dissolved in water, and by adding an aqueous soln. of carbonate or hydrogencarbonate, manganese carbonate is deposited and separated. It is then dissolved in phosphoric acid and manganese phosphate formed is dried to obtain a product.
