Abstract
PURPOSE: Stevia extract is treated with a barium compound readily soluble in water and with sulfuric acid to remove contaminants easily and efficiently.
CONSTITUTION: Stevia extract from its leaves and stalks or its concentrate is combined with an aqueous solution of a barium compound that is readily soluble in water and reacts with sulfuric acid to form barium sulfate readily such as barium hydroxide so that the pH of the extract or concentrate is adjusted to over 7.0, preferably to 7.0W9.0. Then. sulfuric acid is added to the mixture to lower the pH to 3W4 and the precipitate formed is separated.
