Abstract

PURPOSE:To remarkably improve the adhesive strength of a vapor-deposited carbon film onto the surface of tool members by containing Ti in carbon at the time of forming said film on the surface of the tool members made of super hard alloy or high-speed steel. CONSTITUTION:The surfaces of abrasion resistant tool members for cutting are coated with a vapor-deposited carbon film which contains 1-20atom% Ti and the balance consisting substantially of C and is 0.1-10mum average layer thicknesses. Here, if Ti is below the lower limit, desired adhesive strength cannot be assured, and if it exceeds the upper limit, it is difficult to maintain the properties of the vapor deposited C of the fine structure resembling to diamond. Further, if the average layer thickness is below the lower limit, abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance cannot be assured and if it is above the upper limit, peeling and chipping are liable to occur.
