Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a hard alloy for tools of improved toughness without degrading abrasion resistance and melt sticking resistance by providing a soft nitride layer and a hard nitride layer on the surface of a hard alloy having the specific hard phase and bond phase. CONSTITUTION:The hard alloy having the hard face contg. 50-59wt% one or more kinds of carbide, nitride, carbonitride, oxycarbide, oxynitrided, and oxycarbonitride of 4a, 5a, 6a group metals wherein >=10% of the components consists of 4a group compounds, and having the bond phase contg. 5-50% one or more kinds of Fe, Ni, Co, Cr wherein 10-70% of the bond phase contain Mo2C and Mo is manufactured. Such hard alloy is fired in a nitrogen-contg. atmosphere, and its treating conditions, cooling rates, etc. are controlled, whereby the nitride layer superposed with a soft nitrided layer of 1-500mum thickness of hardness lower than that of the hard alloy and a hard nitrided layer of 1-20mum thickness of higher hardness is formed. Thereby, the hard alloy having impact resistance and suited for abrasion resistant tools and cutting tools is obtained.
