PURPOSE:To eliminate restrictions on the number of characters in a character string to be retrieved and the number of retrieving characters, by forming a constant quantity of the string of input hand written characters into blocks and by performing retrieval with this block as one unit. CONSTITUTION:When a write/retrieval change-over switch 4 is set to the write state, the switch 4 makes the state of a blocking device 2 active, and graphic form information of characters generated by a hand written character input device 1 are supplied to the device 2. The device 2 blocks these information into a series of character strings. This block data is supplied to a storage device 3 and is stored block by block. When the switch 4 is set to the retrieval state, the switch 4 makes the state of a retrieving device 5 active, and character information generated in the device 1 are supplied to the devide 5. The device 5 compares the string of hand written characters, which is supplied as a retrieving string, with respective block data stored in the device 3; and if it is detected that the retrieving character string is included in a part of block data, a character string indicated by this block data is output and displayed.
