Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the number of pieces of out-of-prediction and to make a mode code showing a selection predictive value unnecessary, by selecting the predictive value to a sample value based on the sample value of a picture element used to produce plural numbers of predictive value and its nearby picture element. CONSTITUTION:The sample value X of a sampled and binary coded picture signal and applied to the terminal 1 is supplied to a line memory 2a, predictors 3a1- 3an and a predictive selection circuit 4 respectively. The predictor consists of a shift register and a ROM, and the predictive values P1-Pn are delivered through the predictors 3a1-3an and by means of a picture element and its nearby picture element. Then the circuit 4 delivers a signal to select the predictive value Px by means of the sample value of the reference picture element used to produce the values P1-Pn and a part of its nearby picture element. With this output a mutliplexer 5 selects the value Px. Then the prediction error signal Y is obtained from an exclusive OR of the values Px and X, and then delivered through a terminal 8 after a coding.
