Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the blank material for electrical contact having stable performance by a method wherein an oxide of a metal (I) soluble in silver is dispersed in a matrix of a silver-metal (II) alloy consisting of silver and a metal (II) soluble in silver.
CONSTITUTION: An alloy powder is prepared from silver and the metal (II) (e.g., tin) soluble in silver, by melt spraying or the like. On the other hand, an alloy powder similarly prepared from silver and the metal (I) (e.g., Bi or tin) soluble in silver is subjected to internal oxidation so as to produce a powder consisting of silver and the metal (I) oxide. Then, the powder of silver-metal (II) alloy is mixed with the powder consisting of silver and the metal (I) oxide, then the mixture is molded and sintered. The sintering is conducted in a nonoxidizing atmosphere such as N2 gas. By said sintering treatment, the matrix in which the metal (I) oxide is dispersed becomes a uniform alloy matrix consisting of silver and the metal (II). Then, the sintered body is subjected to mechanical working such as extrusion, cold wire drawing and the like so as to convert it into a wire rod suirable for producing electrical contacts or the like.
