Abstract

PURPOSE: An aqueous suspension of an organism containing coenzyme Q is treated with an acid at a specific pH, extracted with a lower alcohol, the filtration residue is heat treated and extracted with a lower alcohol again, and the combination of both extracts are purified to give coenzyme Q inexpesively and efficiently through simple processes.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous suspension of an organism containing coenzyme Q of the formula (n is 1W12) is adjusted in pH to 1W0.5 with a strong acid to effect acid treatment by heating at 50W100°C for 15W120min. Then, the mixture is neutralized with an alkaline compound and extracted with a lower alcohol and the extract is filtered to separate into the filtrate and the filtration residue. After heat treated at 95W130°C for 15W90min, the residue is extracted again with a lower alcohol. Then, the combination of both extracts is purified with a porous adsorbent that is composed of a copolymer with network structure including pores of 300W1,000Å average size, which is made from mainly styrene and divinylbenzene, to obtain coenzyme Q of the formula that is existing in animals and plants as an essential component for the electron transfer system and shows high pharmaceutical and physiological actions.
