Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate the purification procedures of stevioside useful as a sweetening agent, by adding a metallic chloride to a water or hydrous alcohol extract of leaves of Stevia rebaudiana (BERT.) HEMSL, and by removing precipitated or coagulated colloidal impurities.
CONSTITUTION: 1kg of dried leaves of Stevia rebaudiana (BERT.) HEMSL is extracted with 3W10l of water or hydrous alcohol to give an extract, which is concentrated to about a solid concentration of 10W50wt%. 0.1W5wt% of a metallic chloride, e.g. calcuim, aluminum, or iron chloride, is added to coagulate and precipitate colloidal impurities from the concentrate, and the impurities are removed by filtration readily. The subsequent purification procedures with an ion exchange resin, adsorbent, ultrafiltration or dialysis membranes can be carried out smoothly.
