Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent molten metal from solidifying in a supply part by specifying the length of an induction coil holding the molten metal with electromagnetic forces in an electromagnetic casting method of producing a small-section cast ingot. CONSTITUTION:In an electromagnetic casting method of producing a small-section cast ingot of 20-100mm. outside diameters by cooling and solidifying molten metal while holding the same with electromagnetic forces, the length L of an induction coil is selected within a 50mm.<=L<=250mm. range to prevent the molten metal from solidifying in a supply part. For example, the molten metal 1 in a tundish 3 passes through a siphon pipe 2 and pours into an induction coil 4, where it is held by electromagnetic forces and is cooled to solidify by cooling water 5. In the production of an aluminum cast ingot of a 50mm.phi outside diameter, the electromagnetic casting may be smoothly executed at about V=1m/min by using an induction coil of a 85mm.phi inside diameter and L=55mm.. The surface condition of the cast ingot of this time is good.
