Abstract
1389430 Continuous casting DALMINE SpA 9 Nov 1972 [13 Nov 1971] 51764/72 Heading B3F An inert gas, e.g. Ar, is passed down into molten metal in a vertical mould through a vertical pipe of substantially the same composition as the metal, e.g. steel, as it is continuously cast, the pipe being continuously fed into the metal (as from a roll) as its end melts. The cooling by the pipe metal and gas, aided by stirring by the gas shortens the liquid core, is said to reduce porosity at the centre of the resultant casting. In order that the pipe may be introduced centrally, the inflowing molten metal is passed into the mould as a jet or jets offset from the central axis.
