Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid the cloudiness which is easily caused at a nonelectrode part in a liquid crystal display device that utilizes a transposition between the cholesteric phase and the nematic phase, by forming a projected part of an insulating film on the nonelectrode part of the substrate. CONSTITUTION:A phase transposition type liquid crystal display device is formed by holding the cholesteric-nematic liquid crystal 4 between the substrates 1 and 1' (3, 3': vertical orientation agent layer) that contain the electrodes 2 and 2' on each surface. In such display device, the projected parts 7 and 7' made of the insulating film and having 0.1-5mu thickness are provided to the nonelectrode part on the substrate 1 and 1'. The thickness of the convex part is set at about 1/5-1/2 of the thickness of the cell (liquid crystal layer), i.e. about 0.5-10mu usually.
