Abstract

PURPOSE: To permit inversion controlling of display state and enhance fashionability by providing two layers of liquid crystal layers, forming the liquid crystal layer transparent electrodes on one side as the transparent enveloping electrodes of the size encircling the electrodes displaying characters, etc. of the other liquid crystal layer, and controlling voltage to this electrode.

CONSTITUTION: A transparent common electrode 4 is formed on a lower substrate 3 with respect to the transparent segment electrodes 2 of an upper substrate 1. Twisted nematic type (TN) liquid crystal 6 is put therebetween and the substrates are sealed by a sealing material 5 serving also as a spacer to form the liquid crystal A. An enclosing electrode 8 is provided on the bottom surface of a substrate 7 (common with the substrate 3) and an enclosing electrode 10 on the top of a substrate 9 respectively, and TN liquid crystal 12 is put therebetween and sealed 11 to form the liquid crystal layer B. Polarizing plates 15, 16 are so disposed to the outer side of the substrate 1, 9 that the polarization directs intersect orthogonally. A reflecting plate 17 and a light diffusing plate 19 are provided to the under side of the plate 16 and are radiated from a light source 18. The foregoing electrodes 8, 9 are formed to such a size as to enclose the electrodes 2 and the supply voltages of the electrodes 8, 9 are controlled so that inverted displaying may be accomplished.
