Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance which is a synthetic intermediate for a synthetic resin, etc. in high yield in one stage, by treating acrylonitrile with a chlorinating agent and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst of copper-pottasium system.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile is treated with a chlorinating agent and a gas containing oxygen in the presence of a catalyst of copper-pottasium system to give α- chloroacrylonitrile. A copper halide or a mixture of copper oxide with a pottasium halide is used as the catalyst, and usually supported on a carrier, e.g. silica. The weight ratio between the copper and pottasium in the catalyst is preferably in the range of 2:8W9:1 calculated as the elements. The reaction temperature is 200W 400°C and the contact time with the catalyst is 1W20sec. The method is carried out in the one-stage reaction, provides a high effective utilization of chlorine and high yield and is industrial and advantageous without requiring troublesome procedures for treatment of by-products.
